Schalke 04 Maintains 2. Bundesliga Lead Despite Dzeko’s Suspension

FC Schalke 04 has successfully defended its top position in the 2. Bundesliga, even in the absence of their suspended star striker, Edin Dzeko.

In a crucial top-of-the-table encounter against Darmstadt 98, the Royal Blues battled to a 1-1 draw. This result allows them to maintain a one-point lead over their closest pursuers, SV Elversberg and SC Paderborn, with seven matchdays remaining. Darmstadt, currently in fourth place, trails by another point in the tightly contested promotion race.

Moussa Sylla, the winter signing who stepped in for Dzeko following his red card against Hannover 96 (2-2), broke his scoring drought with his first goal for Schalke after 912 goalless minutes, putting his team ahead in the 44th minute. However, striker Isac Lidberg quickly equalized for Darmstadt with his 14th goal of the season just before halftime (45.+5). The match also marked the end of Darmstadt’s impressive run of seven consecutive home victories.

Early in the game, Darmstadt thought they had taken the lead with a bizarre own goal. After Loris Karius parried a shot from Fabian Nürnberger, the ball unluckily ricocheted off Nikola Katic, then off the prostrate Moussa Ndiaye, and into the net (18th). However, referee Robert Hartmann disallowed the goal after a VAR review, determining that Nürnberger had fouled Ndiaye in the build-up.

Marseiler Forced Off After Apparent Serious Injury

Darmstadt suffered another setback shortly thereafter when Luca Marseiler sustained what appeared to be a severe knee injury without any opposing player involvement and had to be stretchered off the field in the 26th minute. Before the break, the «Lilies» fell behind when Sylla headed in a rebound after Timo Becker’s shot had struck the post. Nevertheless, Lidberg managed to secure the equalizer with a clever turn and shot.

In the second half, Schalke goalkeeper Karius made a critical save to deny Fraser Hornby (62nd) from putting Darmstadt ahead. At the other end, substitute Christian Gomis missed a golden opportunity for Schalke to snatch a late winning goal (84th).
