Edin Dzeko has rapidly become a central figure in FC Schalke 04’s attack. His future with the Royal Blues this summer could largely depend on whether the club remains in the 2. Bundesliga.
According to a media report, staying in the 2. Bundesliga might represent an unexpected «consolation prize» for Schalke: club officials are speculating that Edin Dzeko would extend his career by another year if they do not get promoted.
The Bosnian is reportedly planning to conclude his career with a significant achievement, such as promotion. Conversely, this would mean that if Schalke remains in the second tier for the 2026/27 season, the chances of extending Dzeko’s contract increase, despite his current deal only running until the end of the current season.
The experienced striker joined the Gelsenkirchen club during the winter break and quickly established himself as an indispensable part of coach Miron Muslic’s attacking lineup, scoring six goals and providing three assists in just eight appearances.

Schalke’s promotion is currently far from guaranteed, as the race at the top of the table is incredibly tight. While Schalke leads the standings with 52 points from 27 games, they hold only a one-point advantage over SV Elversberg in second place. Close behind them is SC Paderborn in third, with the same number of points. SV Darmstadt 98 (4th / 50 points) and Hannover 96 (5th / 49 points) are also strongly contending for the top spots.
Beyond the potential promotion with Schalke, Dzeko can look back on an impressive and highly successful career. After his breakthrough at VfL Wolfsburg, he moved to Manchester City in 2011 for 37 million Euros. He subsequently played for AS Roma and Inter Milan before transferring to Fenerbahce in Turkey in 2023. Last winter, he then joined FC Schalke 04.
Throughout his career, he has played 864 competitive matches, scoring 377 goals and providing 156 assists. He accumulated most of his scorer points (173) during his 260 appearances for AS Roma.
His achievements include a German championship, two English championships, one FA Cup, one League Cup, and two Coppa Italia titles.
