Romario Defends Neymar, Challenges Ancelotti’s Brazil Selection Stance

A significant controversy has erupted in Brazil regarding the exclusion of Neymar from the national team, prompting former striker Romario to openly criticize head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Romario, a World Cup winner, asserted that «the selection is for the best and most talented,» arguing that a player of Neymar’s caliber should be called up even if not in perfect physical condition. Ancelotti, however, has reiterated his firm stance: Neymar will only be considered for selection once he is «100% physically fit,» citing recent knee problems that have impacted his performance and availability.

Neymar, currently with Santos and undergoing a recovery period, remains at the center of an intense national debate. Romario’s pointed remarks, «Pay attention, sir: a champion must play,» are fueling the hopes of many fans who still view the former Barcelona star as a potentially decisive factor for the 2026 World Cup. This sentiment is echoed by others, including Raphinha, who has also expressed his desire to see Neymar back in the national squad, thereby indirectly increasing the pressure on Ancelotti’s decision-making.
