While Jose Mourinho is considered the top favorite for the Real Madrid coaching position, the club is also reportedly considering a contingency plan.
According to journalist Raul Varela of Radio Marca, former Bundesliga coach Pellegrino Matarazzo is being considered as an alternative to ‘The Special One’ should the Portuguese manager’s move to Madrid fail to materialize.
The club’s leadership, headed by President Florentino Perez, is said to be exploring several options to succeed Alvaro Arbeloa. Matarazzo’s fundamentally modern approach to the game is reportedly valued at Real Madrid, contributing to his popularity within the club.
However, the report also acknowledges that a move for the 48-year-old American is considered unlikely. Madrid remains firmly committed to Mourinho as their next coach, with Belgian transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri even indicating that a deal is already finalized.
The official announcement from Madrid is expected as early as next week. In recent days, rumors of Mourinho’s return to his former stomping ground have intensified. ‘The Special One’ has a release clause of three million euros in his current contract with Benfica, which runs until 2027.
Matarazzo Led Real Sociedad to Copa del Rey Victory
Matarazzo, on the other hand, has a contract with his current club, Real Sociedad, that also extends until 2027. The former VfB Stuttgart and TSG Hoffenheim coach joined the Basque club in late December 2025 and successfully guided the previously struggling team to higher standings and a cup victory in the Copa del Rey.
This triumph means Real Sociedad has secured a spot in the Europa League for the upcoming season, despite their current eighth-place position in the Spanish LaLiga.
