Pep Guardiola Finds Joy in Watching Hansi Flick’s Barcelona

Manchester City’s esteemed coach, Pep Guardiola, has publicly expressed his strong appreciation for the current playing philosophy of FC Barcelona under the guidance of Hansi Flick. Guardiola, 55, known for his tactical genius, admitted he finds their matches highly entertaining.

The former Barcelona player and manager shared his enthusiasm in an interview: «When Flick’s Barca is playing and I have the time, I sit down and watch – because it’s simply enjoyable. Sometimes we overthink things and concoct elaborate narratives. But ultimately, it’s like going to the cinema or a great restaurant; you want to savor the experience. And tell me, when is it ever not enjoyable to watch Barca play?»

Hansi Flick, the former German national team coach, took the reins at FC Barcelona in the summer of 2024, succeeding Xavi. He quickly implemented a bold and spectacular style of play, characterized by an exceptionally high defensive line and relentless offensive pressure. This tactical shift bore immediate fruit, leading to a domestic double in his inaugural year.

This season, Barcelona continues its impressive run, currently leading La Liga and remaining strong contenders in the Champions League.

Thierry Henry Also Commends FC Barcelona’s Resurgence

Flick’s aggressive approach initially drew some criticism, particularly after a few mixed results in the autumn. Critics, including former Real Madrid strategist Toni Kroos, questioned whether this style could secure a Champions League title. Guardiola’s former protégé, Thierry Henry, initially echoed similar doubts.

However, Henry significantly revised his stance last week following Barcelona’s resounding 7-2 victory over Newcastle United in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg. He praised the team, stating, «Congratulations, Barcelona. Europe is beginning to feel the threat. When a team gets into such a rhythm, nothing is certain anymore. This wasn’t just a triumph; it was a global earthquake.»

What particularly struck Henry was how Barcelona transformed their performance in the second 45 minutes after holding a precarious 3-2 lead at halftime. «What a second half that was?» he exclaimed, «It was a complete transformation; the team played with a different character. That was the real Barcelona. When they commit, they can achieve anything. This is an incredible team.»

Henry found the attacking flair of players like Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski reminiscent of Johan Cruyff’s legendary Dream Team from the early 1990s. He expressed sympathy for Newcastle, noting, «Newcastle collapsed against this offensive onslaught. When Barcelona plays like that, they are almost impossible to stop.»
