Omar Richards: Bayern’s €8.5M Profit, a Career Plagued by Injuries

In the summer of 2021, Omar Richards joined FC Bayern Munich on a free transfer, a move widely expected to kickstart a promising career. However, his ascent was brief: after just one season, Richards left Bayern for Nottingham Forest, where his arduous period of suffering and injury woes truly began.

When a young professional footballer is signed by a club like FC Bayern, it generally signals a successful career trajectory thus far. This was certainly the case for Richards, who was an undisputed regular for FC Reading during the 2020/21 season, making 42 competitive appearances across all competitions. This performance quickly drew the attention of numerous top clubs.

When his transfer to the German record champions materialized the following summer, Richards was ecstatic. «I’m overjoyed to join FC Bayern, a club with such a rich history. I feel honored to be a part of it,» the Englishman shared on X. Bayern, too, expressed great anticipation for their new signing. Hasan Salihamidzic, then sporting director, praised him: «Omar is a technically skilled player for the left defense. He finds good solutions in attacking play, he is very attentive, and we believe he can play a good role for our team.»

Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern’s coach from 2021 to 2023, seemingly did not share this assessment. Under Nagelsmann, Richards remained primarily a substitute, only making sporadic appearances, often when Alphonso Davies required a rest. Richards didn’t make his Bundesliga debut until the fifth match of the season. This was followed by short cameos and extended periods without playing time. Consequently, in his sole season at FC Bayern, Richards accumulated only 17 appearances and 575 minutes of play (0 goals, 1 assist).

Despite having a contract valid until 2025, a departure became evident early on. In the summer of 2022, Salihamidzic sold Richards to then-newly promoted Nottingham Forest for a transfer fee of 8.5 million euros – a decision that would later prove to be financially astute for Bayern. While Richards represented a stroke of luck for Bayern, at least financially, solidifying Salihamidzic’s reputation as a strong seller, for the left-back, leaving the record champions marked the beginning of years of hardship.

Omar Richards Plagued by Injuries: «It Wasn’t Easy Mentally to Deal With»

While Richards received minimal playing time at FC Bayern, this was by no means due to injuries. Apart from a nearly two-week bout of Coronavirus that caused him to miss only one game, Richards was fit and available for the entire season. He had also been spared from major injuries before his move to Bayern – but this was set to change dramatically in Nottingham.

Just days after his arrival, doctors diagnosed him with a tibia fracture, requiring surgery. Richards was initially expected to return after the World Cup in Qatar, but this did not materialize. He missed the entire 2022/23 season, sidelined for a total of 346 days and 45 matches. In an Instagram post, he described his frustration: «Where do I even begin… Last year was the most challenging year of my career so far. Having just started at Nottingham Forest, I couldn’t wait to get going and help the team. But just a few days later, I was diagnosed with a broken shin, which required surgery.»

Almost simultaneously, he began experiencing pain in his groin area: «After an examination, it turned out I had a hernia on both sides. I felt like I just had no luck – and since I had never had long-term injuries before, it wasn’t easy mentally to deal with,» Richards explained.

Over a year and a half passed before he returned to the pitch – though not for Nottingham. The club loaned him for a season to the traditional Greek club Olympiakos Piraeus. Things didn’t go as hoped there either: he made his debut only on the 14th matchday of the championship, and throughout the season, he made only nine further league appearances.

Nevertheless, he did win the Conference League with Olympiakos – even if he only watched this triumph from the bench.

Back on Track: Omar Richards Finds His Stride in Portugal

The subsequent season brought a glimmer of hope for the first time. After his loan to Olympiakos ended, the next one followed immediately: Nottingham Forest’s management sent the former England U21 international this time to Rio Ave in Portugal.

The qualitative step down – from Champions League title contender FC Bayern, to a solid Premier League club, then a Conference League winner, and finally a Portuguese mid-table team – was significant. However, for Richards, this new chapter offered a chance to regain confidence. The 2024/25 season saw him largely injury-free, and crucially, he finally played a central role in the team – something he had only achieved at FC Reading many years prior. Of the 31 competitive matches for Rio Ave for which he was available, he started 28.

«It’s good. I feel very much at home at the club, I like living in Vila do Conde, the people are very friendly. So far, everything is going well,» enthused Richards, who also appreciated the Portuguese lifestyle: «My apartment is very close to the beach, the lifestyle is relaxed. I feel very comfortable.»

After a Glimmer of Hope: Omar Richards Faces New Setbacks in Portugal

Following this somewhat successful season, it was unsurprising that Richards was subsequently loaned to Rio Ave for another year – already his third since leaving Bayern.

In the current season, however, old problems have resurfaced. Early on, Richards sustained a knee injury that sidelined him for 104 days and eleven matches. Although the 28-year-old has since recovered, his comeback coincided with a difficult period: of his six league appearances since late January, five resulted in losses, and only one point was gained. In the subsequent three games, Richards was not even in the squad – and Rio Ave won all three. In fact, Richards did not experience a single victory on the pitch in his nine appearances during the 2025/26 season.

Rio Ave’s recent winning streak has helped the club climb back to tenth place in Liga Portugal, though they are not entirely out of the relegation battle yet. The coming weeks will provide clarity on their situation.

So, what’s next for Richards? His second loan at Rio Ave ends after the season, and his contract with Nottingham Forest also expires in the summer. A renewal can safely be ruled out after three years without an appearance for their first team. Little remains of Richards’ once promising career besides disappointment. The sole beneficiary of this story is FC Bayern, who profited €8.5 million from the defender’s sale.
