Nicolò Barella: Inter’s Faith for a Midfield Reboot | Barella 2.0

Nicolò Barella is currently enduring what might be his most challenging season since joining Inter. His recent performance against Fiorentina exemplified this: despite a promising start, where he quickly set up Francesco Pio Esposito for the opening goal, his performance was marred by a critical error made in tandem with Yann Sommer. This mistake contributed to a 1-1 draw in Florence, a result that keeps the Scudetto race tightly contested and, more broadly, resurfaced concerns from his season: instances of errors, visible frustration, and a tendency towards over-elaboration.

Despite these challenges, Inter has no intention of parting ways with their vice-captain at the end of the season. Coach Cristian Chivu views the Sardinian midfielder as integral to his plans and intends to reinstate him in his primary central midfield role. While this might mean fewer goals (he’s only scored one this season), his contribution in terms of assists remains significant, with seven already to his name.

Chivu has shown unwavering faith, consistently featuring Barella despite his dip in form, with 27 appearances in 30 matches, 24 as a starter. It’s true that Inter secured six consecutive victories in his absence, though these were against lower-ranked opponents. The club, however, dismisses the notion that Barella’s absence in February, when they built a significant lead, was anything more than a coincidence.

Inter hopes that his upcoming international duties with Italy will reignite his motivation and help him rediscover his best form. Regardless, the club’s long-term vision remains unchanged: the 1997-born player is slated to be a key starter next season, entrusted with commanding the midfield, potentially alongside Aleksandar Stankovic. This unwavering confidence is expected to pave the way for the emergence of ‘Barella 2.0’.
