McKennie: I want to show that Americans can play at clubs like Juve

Juventus American midfilder Weston Mckennie had a long interview with Sports Illustrate. Here is what he had to say.

On joining Juve

“At first I thought ‘Okay, it’s a loan, it will be like a probationary period of one year.’, but now I feel a sense of belonging, like I found my new home.”

“I think I can play at these levels, with these players I always dreamed of playing alongside.”

“I realize now that I can keep up, that I can play with them, that I can have a role in this team and have an impact.”

“I’m not worried anymore, I hope to be able to show that things are changing and that even a club like Juve can be interested in a player from America.”

“It will be a challenge, I don’t deny that, but I’ve always loved challenges.”

On if he has changed

“I will always be true to myself, I’ll always be me, I won’t change because I speak with Ronaldo or Buffon.”

On fighting against Racism

“I represent a nation that sometimes doesn’t accept me, just because of the color of my skin. I am a footballer, and in the eyes of many I can contribute to the development of American football. ”

“But I am also a human being, I cannot pretend nothing has happened and thus represent a country that does not accept me.”

On if he wouldn’t represent the US team if they don’t stand against Racism

“If the national team does not support the movement or the players who live in these situations, I would say something. I would talk about it with my teammates and if I don’t feel at ease I could, yes, why not, decide not to participate in the retreat ”
