Marchisio: Can’t explain why Juve didn’t win a Champions League

Juventus legend Claudio Marchisio spoke to Cronache di Spogliatoio. Here’s what he had to say.

How it feels to watch Juve from home?

“I’m still experiencing it, but with some more stomach ache, I watch it on TV, not even from the stadium, but always with the passion that I had as a player.”

“Seeing it from the outside, certain moments, especially this year with obstacles and some heavy defeat, it is not easy to hold up.”

Did staying at Juve hold you back, in the “difficult” years?

“Del Piero who had won everything and when we finished seventh he had terrible stomach ache, and so did I.”

“At one point I do not hide that my thought was to win, just that, luckily the following year we started doing it.”

“Offers arrived, but I was fulfilling my big dream and I’m proud of it.”

“When I look at Juve I can only smile, even when it loses, I look at that shirt, I think about what it represents, I know what it means and I smile for what it gave me.”

Winning the 7 Scudetti?

“A small chapter in a great story. Even if it we won only 1, I would still have been happy, when we started this path we did not expect such results.”

“There is a lot inside, it’s not just the trophies, but the matches, the groups, the comebacks, the beauty of reviewing the photos of the end of the year, those smiles that remind you of everything that has been there and it is liberating.”

Racism?

“Pogba said he experienced racism here : a father with a child who insulted him, his response was to give the shirt to the child. That child when he arrived home, I think he no longer saw himself in his dad, but in Pogba.”

“There is a problem of real racism, but part of it is also ignorance, which transforms this passion into something negative that fathers pass on to their children.”

Juve a flop in Europe?

“We in Italy change our thoughts and ideas too quickly: up to the groups Juve had passed easily and this problem was not there.”

“I don’t know why Juve, in such a winning cycle, never got a Champions League. I will never be able to explain it to myself.”

“At a statistical level, in the great cycles in Italian and European history a Champions League always arrived.”

“The intensity and speed of the game is totally different, abroad they work differently: Evra said he trained less but at a very higher intensity and in the game it is like that.”

Dani Alves playing music in the locker room?

“At first it was weird, I didn’t understand it, it was wrong for me. But then I saw that when he went out on the pitch and he gave great performances, and if you tried to take it off him he was even more nervous.”

Buffon?

“He’s surely someone who has given me a lot, it’s not easy for a goalkeeper to be a captain.”

“They have their own small group, they live different times and situations, it’s not easy to be a captain and to be a goalkeeper, but he had a great ability: he saw when the group began to not be concentrated or to stay down, then he would call everyone and talk.”

End of a cycle?

“Juve must see the positive: some young people who are growing well, like McKennie and Chiesa joined the team.”

“After 9 years of winning, a year of passage is normal, it is not a failed season, Juve is always there. After all these victories and trophies, a year like this feels strange, but it’s normal.”

Benzema?

“He was colse to joining the Juve of Ferrara.”
