Luka Doncic experienced a mix of triumph and tribulation: he once again delivered over 40 points in the victory over the Nets but also collected another technical foul that could lead to a suspension.
«Play the same song again,» Doncic seemed to be thinking as he committed his 16th technical foul of the season for the second time within a week. His technical foul from the clash with the Orlando Magic last weekend was rescinded by the NBA – whether he can avoid the one-game suspension again remains questionable.
«I’m sure we’ll appeal it,» Lakers coach JJ Redick announced after the game against Brooklyn. However, the referees had reviewed the situation multiple times on screen during the game before making their decision and whistling the foul against the 27-year-old.
Luka Doncic: «I Didn’t Even Say Anything!»
So, what exactly happened? In the third quarter, after Doncic committed an offensive foul on Nic Claxton, he clashed with Claxton’s teammate Ziaire Williams, who loudly celebrated the Slovenian’s turnover. Doncic pushed Williams’ arm away, who in turn retaliated and touched the Lakers star’s chin. After reviewing the footage, the officials assessed a technical foul to both players.
«Williams yelled in my face three times,» Doncic expressed his incomprehension afterward. «I didn’t even say anything. I just wanted to get away from there. And they said I pushed, that my push was ‘excessive,’ which it obviously wasn’t. I don’t know what else to say about it.»
If the NBA does not overturn the decision, the guard will miss the Lakers’ upcoming game against the Washington Wizards. In his last twelve games, Doncic has been phenomenal, averaging a robust 39.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and 2.5 steals for the Lakers, earning him consecutive Western Conference Player of the Week honors.
