NBA owners have unanimously approved a motion to begin the process of exploring the league’s expansion to 32 teams. This significant step allows the NBA to receive binding offers from potential owners in Seattle and Las Vegas, the two cities identified for potential new franchises.
While not a definitive «yes» to expansion, this unanimous vote marks a crucial progression, making it highly improbable for the league to backtrack. The pace of these developments is swifter than anticipated, with new teams potentially joining the league as early as the 2028-29 season.
Becoming part of the exclusive NBA ownership club will require a substantial investment, as the acquisition cost for each new franchise in Seattle and Las Vegas is estimated to range between 7 and 10 billion dollars.
In an official statement, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver commented, «Today’s vote reflects the intention to explore interest in a possible expansion to Las Vegas and Seattle – two markets that have an important basketball history and have long supported the NBA.»
