Mikel Arteta Under Fire: ‘Must Take Responsibility’ for Controversial Goalkeeper Decision in Arsenal vs. Manchester City Final

Following their defeat in the Carabao Cup final, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is receiving significant criticism for his team selection.

On Sunday, Arteta made the choice to bench his usual starting goalkeeper, David Raya, once more. Instead, backup keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was given the nod to start. Kepa had played in earlier rounds of the Carabao Cup, but his performance in the final included a crucial error.

In the 60th minute, the goalkeeper fumbled a seemingly innocuous cross from Rayan Cherki, enabling Nico O’Reilly to tap in from close range for Manchester City’s opening goal. Shortly after, the young City player netted his second, securing the final scoreline.

Former international Jamie Redknapp expressed little surprise that Kepa was involved and contributed to the defeat. He stated, «I know people will argue that Arteta had to play Kepa again out of sentiment, given he featured in earlier rounds. However, Kepa is simply not as proficient as Raya – which is precisely why he’s the second-choice goalkeeper.»

Redknapp found Arteta’s decision utterly perplexing: «Why would you choose to field him in a major final, when you’re desperate to win a trophy? Arteta must take accountability for this; it was a monumental error!»

Guardiola’s Gamble on Backup Keeper Trafford Pays Off

While Kepa had kept three clean sheets in the preceding five rounds, Redknapp acknowledged, «I’m not claiming he’s a poor goalkeeper.» Nevertheless, he maintained, «He’s simply not on par with Raya, and that decision ultimately backfired.»

Conversely, Pep Guardiola also opted for his designated cup goalkeeper, James Trafford, over first-choice Ederson. Redknapp, in contrast to Kepa, praised Trafford’s strong performance, highlighting «three crucial saves,» after which the young keeper faced no further significant challenges.

Post-match, Arteta publicly supported his criticized player and defended his choice, stating, «I understand the reactions, but I felt it was the right and fair thing to do. Kepa has played throughout this competition, and I believe it would have been unjust to him and the team to change now.» He refused to attribute the loss solely to the 31-year-old goalkeeper, adding, «Mistakes are an inherent part of football.»

Despite Final Defeat, Arsenal Still Eye Multiple Titles

City clinched their first title of the season with this victory, leaving Arsenal to continue their wait for a major trophy since the 2020 FA Cup. Despite this setback, Arteta’s squad still has multiple opportunities to win silverware this season.

Following the international break, the Gunners are set to face Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Just days later, they will play the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash against Sporting Lisbon. Domestically, Arsenal currently leads the Premier League table with a nine-point advantage over City. However, Pep Guardiola’s side has a game in hand and will also enjoy home advantage when the two teams meet directly on April 19th.
