FC Bayern Sporting Director Max Eberl approaches the Champions League blockbuster against Real Madrid with a mix of optimism and respect. He spoke of a «good feeling» and plenty of «self-confidence,» but also emphasized the necessary «humility.»
Nevertheless, the manager of the record champions simultaneously warns: «Even if Real hasn’t always been in top form this season, a dangerous team is approaching us, one that knows exactly when to strike decisively. We must be exceptionally prepared for that.»
A particular statistic gives Eberl cause for concern: Bayern has not secured a victory against Real Madrid in their last eight encounters. «Such a streak doesn’t come out of nowhere and clearly shows how challenging this task is,» Eberl explained. He added: «Even though we are currently in a good phase, we must be extremely vigilant to decide this duel in our favor.»
Before Real Madrid, Focus is on Bundesliga Match Against Freiburg
Before the crunch match against the «Royal Whites,» the dominant league leaders first face SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday (3:30 PM CET). «Our full focus is on Freiburg. We want to become champions and secure the necessary points to clinch the title as quickly as possible,» Eberl stated. He stressed that Real would only be on Bayern’s minds after Saturday evening.
Top striker Harry Kane is expected to miss the Freiburg match. The Englishman is the only player who returned with a minor injury from the recent international break. «We observed very closely what happened during the last international period, as these phases are often difficult for us,» Eberl said. «We are glad that almost all players have returned healthy. For Harry, we still need to wait a few days.»
