Speaking on Sky Sport, former player Giancarlo Marocchi analyzed Italy`s 3-0 defeat to Norway. Here are his comments regarding the team`s performance and the ongoing situation:
“The crucial point is to understand the current state of Italian football as a whole, and unfortunately, this is the difficult situation we face. Even if Luciano Spalletti were to make a drastic decision like resigning, we could theoretically call upon anyone, but who would truly be available and suitable for the role? Not even Merlin the wizard himself would know the answer. A national team coach ideally needs to be able to select 22 players from a significant pool of at least one hundred potential starting-level players.
To achieve that kind of selection depth, you would need at least 5 regular starters consistently playing for each of the 20 Serie A teams. However, that is clearly not the reality today. Between injuries and players who are out of form, we simply don`t have the depth needed. Unless we initiate a serious discussion about the fundamental problems, starting with President Gravina, we won`t resolve this issue. And even if we were to begin addressing it now, we wouldn`t realistically see significant results for another ten years.”
