Major Coaching Change for Orlando Magic? Michael Malone Linked as «Perfect Successor» for Jamahl Mosley

Orlando Magic Head Coach Jamahl Mosley is reportedly on the «hot seat» following a disappointing season, with speculation suggesting a high-profile replacement could be brought in for the next season.

Reports from NBA insiders suggest that the Orlando Magic might conclude the Jamahl Mosley era this summer, potentially bringing in Michael Malone as the new head coach. According to these sources, winning must be the Magic’s top priority. Missing the playoffs with the current roster would deem the season a failure. Despite a 40-36 record after a victory against the Dallas Mavericks (138:127), and a historically strong performance by Cooper Flagg, Orlando currently sits in ninth place. To achieve their minimum goal of reaching the playoffs, they would need to win two crucial play-in games. The Florida-based team had even set championship aspirations before the season began.

Consequently, league sources are linking Michael Malone, the former head coach of the Denver Nuggets, with Orlando. Malone has a proven track record of leading teams to championships, having won the NBA title with the Nuggets in 2023.

Malone Forged an Era with the Nuggets

Malone forged an era with the Nuggets

Malone’s NBA career began in 2001. The 54-year-old steadily climbed the coaching ranks, serving as an assistant coach for the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Hornets, and Golden State Warriors before taking over as head coach for the Sacramento Kings in 2013.

He was dismissed from Sacramento in December 2014 during his second season after a poor start. In the summer of 2015, he signed with the «Mile High City» team, remaining in Denver for nearly a decade. Surprisingly, he was fired in April 2025, just three games before the end of the regular season.

Currently, Malone works as an analyst, but his broadcasting career might be short-lived. League expectations are that Malone will be mentioned in connection with several open head coaching positions this summer. While multiple teams might express interest, sources indicate that this is particularly true for Orlando, should they part ways with Mosley.

Amidst Crushing Home Defeat: Fans Already Demanded Mosley’s Dismissal

Fans demanded Mosley

This season, Mosley has failed to implement an effective offensive system for his two stars, Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero. Furthermore, the team’s long-standing three-point shooting weakness has not been addressed, even with the blockbuster deal for Desmond Bane. Compared to the previous year, the team’s defense has also significantly deteriorated.

The 47-year-old coach has lost the trust of Florida fans over the course of the season. During the last home game against the Atlanta Hawks (101-130), loud boos and «Fire Mosley» chants echoed through the Kia Center. Beyond the team’s performance issues and his lack of popularity among fans, his relationship with the squad is also reportedly not ideal. He has had public disagreements with Paolo Banchero on several occasions.

According to reports, the former No. 1 overall pick, Paolo Banchero, could thrive under Malone, as the coach previously expressed high praise for the All-Star and the Magic’s talent during his time with the Nuggets. League officials, therefore, believe that Malone would be «the perfect successor to elevate the Magic to the next level.»

However, Mosley likely has one last opportunity to guide Orlando to the next level. After spending his first three years with the franchise at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings (14th, 15th, and 13th place), he led the Magic to the playoffs in the 2023-2024 season. Their run ended after seven games in the first round against the Cavaliers. The previous year also saw a first-round exit against the Boston Celtics (1-4).
