Lukas Kwasniok’s Future at 1. FC Köln Uncertain: Coach Vows to Fight for His Job

Trainer Lukas Kwasniok’s position at relegation-threatened 1. FC Köln is precarious following the recent draw. Sporting Director Thomas Kessler refrained from making a clear commitment to the 44-year-old beyond the upcoming international break, after the 3-3 (2-2) Rheinderby against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Speaking to Sky after the match, Kessler stated: «We must now analyze this objectively and rationally. There is great disappointment as we only secured one point, even though we clearly expected three.» He announced his intention to calmly reflect on the situation.

Kwasniok, however, showed a defiant spirit and strongly rejected speculation about his dismissal. «I will fight for this damn job with everything I have. I am absolutely convinced that I am the right man in the right place,» the coach emphasized. He assured that he still feels the backing of the club management.

«They know my qualities, and I value this great task,» Kwasniok said, confirming a meeting for Sunday. «I strongly believe in my power of conviction, and I feel that 100 percent from the team – we are a united front.»

Köln’s Long Winless Streak

Kwasniok took charge of newly promoted Köln at the start of the season. After a promising start in the Bundesliga, the team steadily slid down the table. The club currently faces its eighth relegation in history, having failed to secure a win in seven consecutive matches.

The point gained against Gladbach is a step closer to the overall objective, according to Kwasniok. «That is staying in the league by mid-May. We will push full throttle until the finish line,» he declared. «I am convinced that hard work and diligence will ultimately be rewarded.»
