Der talentierte Fußballspieler Noahkai Banks besitzt die Staatsangehörigkeit beider Länder und könnte sowohl für Deutschland als auch für die USA spielen. Seine jüngste Absage zur Teilnahme am aktuellen Trainingslager des US-WM-Gastgeberlandes hat jedoch den ehemaligen US-Nationalspieler Landon Donovan erheblich verärgert.

Nach Ansicht von Landon Donovan, dem 44-jährigen Rekordnationalspieler der USA, sollte Noahkai Banks, der 19-jährige Profi des FC Augsburg, keine weitere Chance erhalten, das Trikot der US-Nationalmannschaft zu tragen. Ich habe immer betont, dass solche Entscheidungen von der eigenen Leidenschaft geleitet werden sollten. Wäre er wirklich ein Teil der US-Mannschaft sein wollen, wäre dies längst klar. Er hat an zahlreichen Trainingslagern teilgenommen, auch im Jugendbereich. Der Verband hat sich lange um ihn bemüht. Es erweckt den Anschein, als würden wir ihn anflehen, für unser Land zu spielen. Das ist schlichtweg Unsinn.»
