Lamine Yamal’s Emotional Reaction to Barcelona’s Late Winner Against Atletico: Hansi Flick Explains Superstar’s Exit

Although FC Barcelona had every reason to celebrate in Madrid, young star Lamine Yamal remained visibly unhappy after their crucial victory.

Barca’s late win over Atletico Madrid marked a significant step towards defending their LaLiga title. However, Lamine Yamal’s frustrated departure from the pitch ended up overshadowing the team’s joy.

When Robert Lewandowski netted the decisive goal in the 87th minute, TV cameras captured Yamal’s reaction: he did not celebrate with his teammates. Instead, he appeared visibly upset and had to be comforted by teammate Pau Cubarsi.

A similar scene unfolded immediately after the final whistle. Yamal, accompanied by the goalkeeper coach, angrily left the Estadio Metropolitano’s field and headed into the catacombs while his teammates celebrated their victory. On the sidelines, he was also seen having a brief discussion with head coach Hansi Flick.

Flick: No Early Decision in LaLiga Title Race

Hansi Flick sought to downplay the post-match scenes, explaining that Yamal was angry about his own performance. Flick stated: «It’s normal for him to be angry. He tried a lot and didn’t score a goal, even though he had many chances. He wants to score goals and provide assists; they decide the game.»

Flick further elaborated: «It was about his performance, which wasn’t good. We spoke about it in the dressing room, and everything is fine now. It was an emotional game.»

Thanks to Lewandowski’s late strike, Barca capitalized on title rival Real Madrid’s slip-up, who lost 2-1 against Mallorca earlier that afternoon. Barcelona now holds a seven-point lead at the top of the table with eight matchdays remaining. However, Flick was keen to avoid any talk of a premature title decision: «These are three very important points. But we still have eight games ahead of us. Nothing is decided, and we must continue to do our job.»

Flick’s squad will have a quick reunion with Atletico on Wednesday when the Rojiblancos visit Camp Nou for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
