Karim Coulibaly could bring a considerable sum into Werder Bremen’s coffers this summer. Indications are strong that the 18-year-old German junior international will leave the club after this season. His departure from the Weser is described as «100 percent planned,» and several renowned clubs are showing great interest.
Above all, Club World Cup winner FC Chelsea is intensifying its efforts for Coulibaly. Although there have been no direct talks with Werder yet, the Blues have already contacted the player’s representatives regarding a possible transfer for the upcoming season.
In addition to Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Napoli are also closely monitoring the talented center-back. A planned scouting mission by Real last weekend could not take place, however, as Coulibaly had to withdraw from the Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig (1:2) due to muscular problems.
Karim Coulibaly Reportedly Dreams of PSG
For several weeks now, Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain has also been considered a potential interested party. Reports suggest that representatives of the French club have already contacted Coulibaly and exchanged ideas. The player’s name is said to be «very high» on coach Luis Enrique’s list for the upcoming season. It is said to be the defender’s «dream» to play for PSG during his career.
In an otherwise rather challenging season for Werder Bremen, Coulibaly has been one of the few bright spots. Early in the season, he made his debut in central defense and quickly secured a regular starting position. At 18 years, 3 months, and 7 days, he became the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history during the spectacular 3:3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 2.
His contract with Werder, extended last summer, runs until 2029 and does not include a release clause. It is reported that Werder boss Clemens Fritz and Coulibaly’s agent Nochi Hamasor have already agreed on a sale for the new season. An offer of 20 million euros from an unnamed club was rejected by Bremen in the winter.
The strong interest from several financially powerful clubs should be in the Hanseatic club’s interest, as they can expect a high transfer fee in a potential bidding war. Expectations range between 40 and 50 million euros. This would make Coulibaly Werder’s record sale, significantly surpassing Diego, who moved to Juventus for 27 million euros in 2009.
Karim Coulibaly: From HSV to Werder Bremen
Born in Oldenburg, Coulibaly played for Bramfeld and Barmbek in his youth before joining Hamburger SV in 2018. After six years with the northern rivals, he moved to Werder on a free transfer in 2024.
Most recently, Coulibaly was called up for the German U21 national team by coach Antonio Di Salvo for the first time, having previously played for the DFB’s U17, U18, and U19 teams.
Karim Coulibaly’s Performance Data This Season
