Record national player Lothar Matthäus has called for Julian Nagelsmann’s immediate resignation, leveling harsh criticism at the current national coach.
«I would resign. That would be man enough for me to say: That’s it,» Matthäus told Bild. He questioned why Julian Nagelsmann lacks the character and insight to realize that he has no future with this team.
Matthäus continued, stating that he would focus «as quickly as possible not on an XXL severance package, but rather try to process everything and do better in the future. It’s a matter of character: I didn’t make it, the DFB trusted me, I disappointed the fans, I disappointed the players, I resign.»
Other coaches, such as the Dutchman Ronald Koeman, have «shown the way,» said Matthäus, captain of the 1990 World Cup-winning team. However, Nagelsmann apparently believes he may have done everything correctly. The former Bayern coach «came to this position too early. Perhaps he can do it in 10, 15 years when he has gained more experience.»
Following a summit with association bosses at the German Football Association headquarters on Thursday, Nagelsmann appears to be on the verge of being replaced. The DFB bosses suggested a voluntary resignation to him, and he was reportedly given time to consider. Jürgen Klopp is considered the clear favorite to succeed Nagelsmann.
