Julian Álvarez: Atletico Madrid’s Frustration Mounts Over Barcelona’s Transfer Pursuits

Julian Álvarez is considered a potential new signing for FC Barcelona. However, this persistent interest from the Catalans is increasingly causing annoyance at Atletico Madrid.

After star striker Julian Álvarez recently left his future at Atletico Madrid open beyond the summer, there now appears to be a crucial turn regarding the FC Barcelona transfer target.

Barça will likely not be able to implement its plans for Álvarez next summer. According to reports, Atletico currently has no intention of selling the 26-year-old forward to the Catalans. In Madrid, irritation is growing over how aggressively Barcelona is publicly pursuing the Argentinian World Cup winner.

Furthermore, Atletico is in a very strong negotiating position: Álvarez is under contract with the club until 2030, and his contract includes a release clause of around 500 million Euros. This allows the Madrilenians to easily block a move to the reigning Spanish champions. An offer significantly above 100 million Euros would have to be made for the club to even consider letting the striker move abroad.

Will Julian Álvarez Join FC Barcelona?

Nevertheless: After the 5-2 victory in the Champions League round of 16 first leg against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday evening, Álvarez was asked if he would play in an Atletico shirt next season. His answer was by no means definitive: «I don’t know yet. Maybe yes, maybe no,» said the Argentinian, adding: «I am happy here.»

Álvarez’s words are unlikely to ease the minds of Atletico’s management, while conversely, they fuel new hope at Barça. The Catalans want to bring the 26-year-old to Camp Nou as a potential successor to Robert Lewandowski. Whether the Pole will stay at Barça for another year or leave the club on a free transfer in the summer remains open.

Atletico Hopes Julian Álvarez Stays

In addition to Barça, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are also reportedly positioning themselves for Álvarez. The French club and the Blues would be more capable of putting the high price for the striker on the table; Chelsea is said to have already held talks with Álvarez’s agents.

Atletico, meanwhile, is determined to keep the Argentinian international and would even like to extend his contract prematurely. «I am happy with him. I hope he stays at Atletico for many more years,» emphasized coach Diego Simeone.

However, whether this long-term planning is mutual remains to be seen. In the recent past, there have been rumors that Álvarez doubts whether Atleti is the right club to realize his dreams of winning major titles.

On Tuesday, Álvarez contributed two goals and an assist to the clear victory over Tottenham. Atletico paid a hefty 75 million Euros for the 1.70-meter tall player to Manchester City in 2024, and Álvarez is a regular starter in attack for Madrid.

Even when things were tough this season and he went almost four months without a goal in LaLiga from early November to late February, Simeone stuck with him. Álvarez continued to score regularly in the Champions League and Copa del Rey, but his overall goal tally is not outstanding due to the league drought. Across all competitions, Álvarez has scored 16 goals and provided seven assists in 41 appearances in the 2025/26 season so far.
