Inter Milan’s Crisis: Questionable Transfers, Key Injuries, and Faltering Veterans

In this challenging period for the Nerazzurri, attention naturally turns to the effectiveness of the past summer transfer window. Oaktree’s strategic vision involved acquiring several young players with the aim of reducing the squad’s average age. However, these significant investments haven’t yielded the expected returns. Bonny and Sucic, for whom Inter spent nearly 50 million euros, showed initial promise but have since faded, leaving coach Chivu hoping for their resurgence in the season’s final stretch. While they’ve displayed glimpses of talent, they are currently far from establishing themselves as consistent starters, a role some might have anticipated, especially for the Croatian.

Further illustrating transfer missteps, Luis Henrique, a €25 million acquisition from Marseille, frequently featured due to Dumfries’ injury. Despite opportunities, his impact was underwhelming, leading to him being placed on the market in January, with a June departure also anticipated. Similarly, Diouf, an unfamiliar name to many, joined from Ligue 1 for €25 million. Intended to bolster the midfield following the departure of Lookman and Manu Koné, he has struggled to find a defined role. He has been deployed across various positions including right wing-back, high winger, and even second striker after a brief stint in central midfield. For a player nearing 23, this lack of positional clarity makes it difficult to view the investment as successful. The only apparent bright spots in an otherwise disappointing transfer window appear to be the arrivals of Pio Esposito and Akanji.

These transfer market issues are a significant factor in the Nerazzurri’s current struggles, but they are not the sole cause. Setting aside refereeing controversies, the team’s difficulties also stem from the prolonged absences of several key, influential players, and the underperformance of veteran squad members. Several ‘overs,’ who were expected to provide experience and stability after renewing their contracts last season, have been largely ineffective throughout the current campaign. Sommer’s form has declined, while Acerbi and de Vrij have become less reliable, delivering subpar performances when called upon. Darmian appears fatigued and perpetually injured, and Mkhitaryan, plagued by various stops and starts, is a shadow of the vital player whose absence was once keenly felt by the team.

When you combine a questionable transfer market, the aging and underperforming veteran players, and critical seasonal injuries to pivotal figures like Calhanoglu (who has played sporadically without continuity), Dumfries (whose absence has been most keenly felt), Thuram (who hasn’t recovered his form), and Lautaro (injured at the most crucial juncture), the reasons for the Nerazzurri’s recent drop in points and overall struggles become unmistakably clear.
