«I Cried After the Game»: Gianluigi Donnarumma Speaks Out with Emotional Post Following Bitter World Cup Exit

Gianluigi Donnarumma has publicly expressed his emotions following Italy’s latest failure to qualify for the World Cup.

The Italian goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, addressed the supporters of the Squadra Azzurra in an emotional Instagram post after their elimination from World Cup qualification by Bosnia and Herzegovina.

«I cried after the game. I cried because I was so disappointed not to have led Italy to where it belongs. I cried because I am infinitely sad, just like the entire Azzurri team, whose captain I am with pride. And I know that you, the fans of our national team, feel the same way,» the player wrote.

As of Tuesday, it has been confirmed that the Italian national team will not participate in a World Cup final tournament for the third consecutive time. In the playoff final, Coach Gennaro Gattuso’s team was defeated 1:4 on penalties by Bosnia and Herzegovina. Italy’s last World Cup appearance was thus almost twelve years ago, at the 2014 finals in Brazil.

«A Disgrace to Football»: Gianluigi Donnarumma Caused a Stir Against Bosnia

Despite the profound disappointment, Donnarumma remains defiant and addresses a hopeful appeal to the fans: «Words are hardly helpful now, that’s true. But there’s one thing I feel very strongly, and I want to share it with you: After this immense disappointment, we must find the courage to open a new chapter. And for that, a lot of strength, passion, and conviction are needed. Always believe in it; that is the driving force for progress.»

Life rewards those «who give their all without holding back. And this is exactly where we must start anew. Together. Once again. To bring Italy back to where it belongs,» the 27-year-old continued.

Donnarumma, who became European champion with Italy in 2021, must therefore continue to wait for his first World Cup appearance. Against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the goalkeeper also caused an incident during the penalty shootout when he tore up the notes of his Bosnian opposing goalkeeper, Nikola Vasilj – leading to a brief scuffle. Subsequently, sharp criticism was leveled at Donnarumma: «This guy is a disgrace to football: Donnarumma’s unprecedented and unfair move during the penalty shootout!»
