Hansi Flick’s Fury, a National Player’s Exit: How a Transfer Blunder Divided FC Bayern Munich

Under Vincent Kompany, numerous homegrown talents have ascended to the professional squad this season at FC Bayern Munich. This marks a stark contrast to the recent past, when a lack of youth integration led to the departure of several current top players. One particular transfer misstep even alienated a future German national team star.

FC Bayern Munich upholds a unique tradition that particularly delights the culinary senses of Bavarians. Whenever a talent from their academy makes a senior team debut, campus staff are treated to a communal Weißwurstfrühstück (white sausage breakfast). However, this season, such gatherings are no longer rare occurrences but rather a regular routine.

Head coach Vincent Kompany has given the campus canteen staff no fewer than nine (!) occasions to heat up the legendary sausages – at least by a simple count. Since Lennart Karl’s debut at the Club World Cup last summer, an equal number of youngsters have made their professional debuts. In recent weeks, the chefs and Weißwurst suppliers have struggled to keep up with the demand.

«Here we are again – sooner than expected,» youth academy director Jochen Sauer recently greeted the kitchen staff. Originally, the culinary treat was a result of Maycon Cardozo’s debut against Gladbach in early March. Since then, Deniz Ofli, Filip Pavic, and most recently Erblin Osmani have also made their debuts. Due to a minor injury crisis before the international break, a string of debuts occurred one after another. Master of Ceremonies Kompany had already rewarded Wisdom Mike, David Santos Daiber, Cassiano Kiala, and Felipe Chavez earlier in the season. A new record!

«We have already achieved the most debuts per season by homegrown players and the highest total playing minutes with the youngest average age of the respective players,» Sauer enthused, emphasizing that no other club in Europe’s top leagues could boast such a record. Likely to alleviate the burden on campus staff, no further Weißwurst breakfasts are currently planned. Instead, a barbecue will be held in the summer «to properly celebrate our record-breaking season.»

The significance of this historical milestone is underscored not only by the planned ‘break’ from tradition but also by a look at the recent past. Such extensive promotion of talent was not nearly as pronounced a few years ago and cost FC Bayern many established top players of today. Among them is Angelo Stiller, who, thanks to his outstanding performances at VfB Stuttgart under former FCB youth coach Sebastian Hoeneß, is currently vying for a spot in the German national team for the upcoming World Cup. His departure from the German record champions was preceded by a «slap in the face,» primarily attributable to then-coach Hansi Flick.

Tiago Dantas at the Center: Hansi Flick’s Historic Five-Player Transfer Flop

Flashback to 2020: Bayern, fresh off winning the treble with Flick, were on their way to a sextuple. With the autumn transfer window extended until October 5th due to the Corona pandemic, an unprecedented transfer offensive unfolded. Within 24 hours, Bayern announced the signings of Marc Roca (then 23, nine million euros fee), Bouna Sarr (28, eight million), Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (31, free transfer), Douglas Costa (30, loan), and a certain Tiago Dantas (19, loan). Then-sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic was primarily responsible for these moves.

Looking back two years later, this somewhat panic-driven approach, following a concerning 1-4 defeat to TSG Hoffenheim, proved to be one of Bayern’s most misguided transfer market activities. Only Choupo-Moting provided lasting value, while Sarr and Costa offered little to the squad. Roca and Dantas, moreover, blocked the pathways for homegrown talents like Munich-born and club-trained Stiller, as well as Adrian Fein (now at SSV Jahn Regensburg) – and to make matters worse, some of them came at a significant cost.

Bayern managed a transfer profit of three million euros for Roca two years later when he moved to Leeds United for a reported twelve million euros. The loan deal for Dantas from Benfica Lisbon, however, appears even more questionable. It was reportedly initiated primarily at Flick’s insistence, who had discovered the undeniably talented Portuguese player during his time as sporting director at the DFB and, according to rumors, pushed the transfer against Salihamidzic’s wishes. «Brazzo» allegedly had other plans for the midfield at the time.

Just a few months after the quintuple transfer, a debate erupted on campus regarding the astonishment that Dantas, who regularly trained with the first team, was being favored over homegrown talent Stiller. The fact that Dantas was only eligible to play for the senior team from January 1st further fueled the already burning discussion. The reason: the necessary documents for the deal arrived after the actual transfer deadline, meaning he could not be registered before the end of the embargo period. The media reports, however, greatly angered Flick.

«That’s not true,» he retorted, complaining, «People are constantly trying to drive a wedge between the first team and the campus.» He asserted that he maintained constant communication with the academy, stating, «If there’s anything, we speak with one voice.» However, Stiller’s statements in November 2021 suggested that these rumors weren’t entirely unfounded.

The now 24-year-old described the signings of Roca and Dantas as a «slap in the face.» In the subsequent summer, he elaborated, stating, «Ultimately, it was clear to me then that my journey with Bayern would end after that season.» And so it did. Stiller allowed his contract to expire and moved to TSG Hoffenheim on a free transfer. Having become a regular starter under Hoeneß, he followed him to VfB Stuttgart for the 2023/24 season, where he made significant further progress in his development.

Tiago Dantas Disappointed at FC Bayern – and Became a Globetrotter

Today, Stiller is regarded as one of the country’s top midfielders and recently started twice for the DFB team in the March training camp, marking the beginning of a new World Cup year. National coach Julian Nagelsmann had initially omitted the Stuttgart key player – to the bewilderment of some experts. However, due to injury-related withdrawals of Aleksandar Pavlovic, another Munich homegrown talent, and Felix Nmecha (BVB), Stiller immediately moved into the starting XI, allowing him to quietly rekindle hopes for a World Cup ticket.

And Dantas? He never managed to live up to the high expectations. Even Flick quickly realized that Dantas simply wasn’t suited for FC Bayern. The technically gifted midfield talent showed significant physical deficiencies, ultimately making only two meager appearances in the Bundesliga. While Flick, amidst constant clashes with Salihamidzic, departed that summer and ultimately failed as national coach, Bayern officials opted not to exercise the eight-million-euro purchase option for Dantas.

Benfica also found little use for Dantas, who, after his return, was loaned out three more times, becoming a true globetrotter. Moving from CD Tondela (Portugal) to PAOK Saloniki (Greece) and AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands), the 18-time Portugal U21 international signed a one-year contract with Croatian first-tier club NK Osijek in the summer of 2024, securing a regular starting spot for the first time in his still young career.

While still showing noticeable deficiencies in duels, Dantas shone primarily as a passer. This led to another free transfer to HNK Rijeka for the current season. At the 2017 champions and multiple cup winners, he has become the central pivot, also impressing with his goal-scoring threat. He has contributed eight goals and ten assists in 44 competitive matches to date.

Dantas almost had the chance to showcase his skills to a German audience again, had Rijeka not been eliminated by Racing Strasbourg in the Conference League Round of 16. In the next round, the French club will face Mainz 05. Despite being third in the league, a significant distance behind leaders Dinamo Zagreb, Dantas doesn’t have to bury his dream of winning his first major title as a crucial team member, especially after securing the Bundesliga title and Club World Cup as a perpetual reserve in Munich.

Following a thrilling 3-2 victory in the Croatian Cup quarterfinals against Hajduk Split, which featured three (!) goals in stoppage time, including a penalty from Dantas to temporarily equalize at 1-1, he now faces his former club Osijek in the semi-finals. A triumph would mark the provisional highlight of his previously less successful career.
