The administrative journey towards the construction of a new stadium for Inter and AC Milan in the historic San Siro area has officially begun in Milan. This crucial step follows the sale of the Meazza stadium and its surrounding land by the City Council to both football clubs on November 5th of last year. The ambitious goal set for this significant urban development is to commence construction work in the second half of 2027.
The City Council has taken a decisive step by publishing the resolution that initiates the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) procedure. This assessment is a vital component of the proposed implementation plan, ensuring environmental sustainability. The overarching process will eventually lead to the formal adoption of the plan and the subsequent approval of ‘Functional Section 1.’ This initial phase specifically outlines key components: the relocation of the Patroclo Tunnel, the construction of the brand-new stadium, and the partial demolition of the iconic current Meazza stadium.
A subsequent phase of the San Siro area’s redevelopment will focus on comprehensively repurposing the preserved section of the existing stadium. This will be complemented by the development of additional private facilities, including tertiary and commercial spaces, and the creation of extensive new green areas. A substantial portion, specifically 80,000 square meters of these green spaces, will be transferred to the City Council, enhancing public amenities.
Region Lombardy and the City of Milan have reached a consensus on the principal stages required for the project’s successful execution. In the coming weeks, a significant agreement is expected to be signed between them and the company Stadio San Siro S.p.A. This accord will solidify their commitment to finalize the entire approval process within a timeframe that ensures the initiation of construction works in the latter half of 2027 as planned.
