Gravina: “Serie A at 18 teams? A topic I am no longer addressing”

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina addressed the recent chaos surrounding rescheduled matches, which occurred after events like the passing of Pope Francis and Lecce`s physiotherapist Graziano Fiorita. Speaking on the matter, Gravina stated, “Rescheduling chaos? We discussed it today and agreed, in conjunction with all parties involved, that a protocol will be established to guide procedures for all potential events that may occur.”

He continued, highlighting the need for clear guidelines: “When a tragic event like Fiorita`s occurs, we are understandably overcome by moments of confusion and react quite emotionally. We need the ability to establish a clear protocol. We cannot repeatedly convene and decide on measures case by case. A protocol is necessary to outline everything that should be done in such instances.”

The head of the Football Federation also commented on the jersey used by Lecce for the match against Atalanta, which paid tribute to the physiotherapist. Gravina remarked, “Lecce`s message must be understood. Our deepest sympathy goes to the family, the club, and the community affected by the grief – not just Lecce fans, but everyone who loves football. These episodes are upsetting. Football is a single, broad community, and the level of sensitivity is particularly heightened.”

Gravina further added, expressing support for Lecce`s gesture: “Lecce`s message is strong, coming from a club that at that moment wanted to express its grief and deepest anguish. There is great respect for the suffering of a community that comes before any other boundary.”

Finally, the President spoke about a potential return to an 18-team Serie A championship format: “It`s a topic I`m no longer addressing. Since I granted autonomy to the Serie A League, I believe it`s a matter I leave to the individual stakeholders. I have gained experience and can say that it will no longer be just a Serie A problem, but one of a global nature. The final phase of the Club World Cup and the splendid format of the Super Champions League might prompt reflections not only in Italy but globally.”
