Gian Piero Gasperini commented on Atalanta`s victory over Milan in an interview with DAZN. The Atalanta coach said: “It was a very beautiful and decisive goal, resulting from the winger and midfielder joining the attack. We struggled to achieve this in the first half, but this was a great team effort.”
When asked about what could make him leave Atalanta, Gasperini replied: “For me, this season is incredible. Tonight`s victory gives us a great chance to qualify for the Champions League again, which is an extraordinary achievement and crucial for Bergamo.”
Regarding the possibility of staying if Atalanta qualifies for the Champions League again, he stated: “Tonight is already a wonderful evening. The league is becoming increasingly challenging. Bologna`s win was a threat, so winning at San Siro is an incredible turning point. We need to achieve our maximum goal after a fantastic season, and qualifying for the Champions League would be a great way to crown it.”
Discussing Bellanova playing as a defender, Gasperini explained: “Aside from the numerical difficulties we had in defense, Kossounou is returning from an injury and played very well tonight. Toloi, despite some minor issues, was also extraordinary when he came on. Losing Kolasinac was a significant blow for us, as he is not only very strong but also interprets his role on the field exceptionally well. Facing Leao and Theo on the wings, we needed Bellanova and the `37-year-old kid` (referring to another player) to defend and attack, and they performed very well for a period. We had to make changes later, but it still worked out well.”
When asked about any regrets, Gasperini dismissed the idea: “Let`s be serious, how can we have regrets with 64 points? It`s true that we are 7 points behind the top two due to losing head-to-head matches, but realistically thinking Atalanta could compete for the Scudetto is a bit exaggerated from a technical standpoint. Just look at the strength of the teams behind us.”
