BERGAMO, April 5 – Gian Piero Gasperini downplayed concerns about Atalanta`s supposed “collapse” following their match against Fiorentina. “This talk of a `collapse` after the Fiorentina game is a bit exaggerated, it`s not like we were the only ones who lost points,” Gasperini stated ahead of Atalanta`s game against Lazio. “I struggle to see it as a collapse. Just two games prior, we secured a fantastic victory against Juventus, and we also played well against Inter, even though we lost.”
Looking ahead to the match with Lazio, Gasperini noted, “Tomorrow marks the first of five home games out of the remaining eight. Let`s put things into perspective. We need to assess if we are ready for the final push. We`ve never been in such an advantageous position at this stage of the season. Even the fans don`t believe in this `collapse` narrative, you can see it in their attitude. I differentiate between the public`s view and the media narrative.”
Briefly commenting on their opponents, he said, “Lazio is an excellent team, strong in every area, competing in the Europa League, and experiencing some ups and downs.”
Gasperini added, “This game won`t be definitive or decisive, but a win would give us a lead that would be hard to overcome. It`s not like Atalanta can secure their season`s outcome with eight games still to play.”
Finally, regarding President Antonio Percassi`s comments expressing hope for Gasperini`s continued tenure – “we hope the coach stays, he`s a great manager,” made during the preview of the documentary `Atalanta. A Life as Dea` about their Europa League triumph – Gasperini responded, “It`s yet another demonstration of our mutual respect and appreciation. Everything else is part of football, and football moves on,” concluded Gasperini, whose contract expires in 2026.
