Frances Tiafoe has secured his most significant career title by winning the Halle Open, defeating compatriot Taylor Fritz in an all-American final.
The 28-year-old triumphed for the first time in his career at a 500 series event. Tiafoe defeated Fritz, who had previously eliminated Alexander Zverev, with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the Terra Wortmann Open final on Sunday.
Tiafoe’s previous titles were all on the 250 series level: Delray Beach in 2018, Houston in 2023, and Stuttgart on grass in 2023. Before Halle, the two-time US Open semi-finalist had lost one 1000 series final (Cincinnati 2024) and three 500 series finals.
Frances Tiafoe Returns to the Top 20 of the World Rankings
Tiafoe, who defeated Daniel Altmaier in the semi-finals, achieved his third victory against a Top 10 player in Halle. He had previously beaten French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli and World No. 4 Félix Auger-Aliassime.
Fritz had reached the final with a three-set victory over a physically struggling Paris champion Alexander Zverev. However, like the week before in Stuttgart, he missed out on the championship and his sixth grass-court title.
In the new world rankings, Fritz climbs from ninth to seventh place. Former Top 10 player Tiafoe returns to the Top 20 as World No. 19.
