FC Bayern Reaches Agreement with Key Player for Contract Extension

FC Bayern is reportedly nearing a contract extension for Konrad Laimer, according to honorary president Uli Hoeneß, as reported by Sport1.

Initial reports from Altötting, where Hoeneß was a guest at the general meeting of ‘meine Volksbank Raiffeisenbank,’ suggested that Hoeneß had stated, «Konrad Laimer has signed.» However, this was later clarified, with the report now indicating that Hoeneß stated an agreement has been reached on the essential points, with only Laimer’s signature remaining.

The 29-year-old’s current contract with the record Bundesliga champions is set to expire in 2027. Hoeneß did not provide details regarding the new contract’s duration, and an official announcement from the club is still pending.

The impending conclusion of the protracted negotiations between FCB officials, including sporting director Max Eberl, and Laimer’s representatives comes as no great surprise. Just over a week ago, Kicker reported that a broad agreement had been achieved between the parties on terms described as «economically reasonable for the club» by those in Munich.

Negotiations Between FC Bayern and Konrad Laimer Were Temporarily Halted

The lengthy eight-month discussions had previously encountered differences, primarily concerning financial expectations, which led to the negotiations being put on hold at one point.

At that juncture, the double-winning club was reportedly prepared to «let Laimer go if necessary,» according to Kicker. Laimer was said to be seeking a salary of around 15 million euros per year. When these rumored figures, which the player himself later dismissed as fanciful, became public, Hoeneß openly expressed his strong opinion ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg against PSG.

«When you read what is supposedly reported about his salary and demands, you have to put it in perspective: Conny is a player I highly value. He is extremely important to the team, just as he is to the club’s public image. He works incredibly hard for the team. But he is not Maradona,» the club patron stated at the time to DAZN. «What he is currently earning, very few clubs in Europe can even offer. I don’t know what Max (Eberl) and Christoph (Freund) specifically offered him, but it certainly wasn’t what his advisors demanded at the beginning.»

Konrad Laimer Joined FC Bayern from RB Leipzig

Laimer transferred to Munich on a free transfer from RB Leipzig in 2023. He was initially intended as an alternative for central midfield, but has since established himself as the first-choice right-back, capable of playing on the left when needed. His commitment and tireless work rate have made him generally indispensable to head coach Vincent Kompany.

Nevertheless, Hoeneß remained firm: «This has nothing to do with our fundamental policy, but is a realistic assessment of his sporting and economic value. That is high – but he is not Harry Kane.» Laimer, however, emphasized at the beginning of April that his priority in the negotiations was «recognition.»

According to Sport1, Hoeneß personally intervened in the contract negotiations at the end of May, apparently with success.

Laimer is currently with the Austrian national team at the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. After a victory (3-1 against Jordan) and a defeat (0-2 against Argentina), the ÖFB team will compete for second place in Group J on Sunday against Algeria on the final matchday of the preliminary round.
