FC Barcelona Eyes €100 Million+ Superstar Signings: Julian Alvarez and Anthony Gordon on Radar

FC Barcelona is aggressively pursuing new signings for the upcoming season, aiming to secure Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid and potentially Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United before the World Cup. Reports indicate a meeting took place in Barcelona between the Spanish champions’ sporting management and Alvarez’s representative, Fernando Hidalgo. The presence of other prominent football agents, including Juanma Lopez (who has strong ties to Atletico Madrid), suggests a concerted effort to facilitate the transfer.

Atletico Madrid, however, is reluctant to part with the 26-year-old Argentine forward, who joined from Manchester City in 2024 for €75 million and is under contract until 2030. The club has reportedly set a €150 million price tag on Alvarez amidst persistent transfer rumors and public admiration from Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta.

Barcelona aims to secure Alvarez for around €100 million plus bonuses. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggests an initial offer from Catalonia is imminent. Barcelona is in the market for a new striker as Robert Lewandowski is set to leave the club upon contract expiration. While Alvarez is the primary target, Joao Pedro from Chelsea is considered a backup option.

Barcelona is keen on finalizing Alvarez’s transfer before Argentina’s World Cup debut on June 17th. Both clubs are reportedly eager to avoid a drawn-out transfer saga. Alvarez has had a successful season for Atletico Madrid, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists in 49 appearances. Despite interest from PSG and Arsenal, Alvarez reportedly favors a move within Spain.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s pursuit of Anthony Gordon appears more advanced. Reports suggest the Catalan club has outmaneuvered Bayern Munich for the winger. Gordon is expected to undergo a medical and sign a contract until 2031, with an annual salary of €18 million. Newcastle is set to receive €80 million for the transfer. President Laporta has confirmed that Gordon’s transfer is «in full swing» and he is being kept informed of all developments.

Barcelona’s history of record transfers includes Ousmane Dembele (€148 million), Philippe Coutinho (€135 million), and Antoine Griezmann (€120 million).
