Nella terza tappa del Giro di Catalogna, i due fuoriclasse Remco Evenepoel e Jonas Vingegaard hanno dato vita a una fuga spettacolare, trasformando una tappa di pianura in una sfida diretta. A 24 km dall’arrivo a Vila-seca, Evenepoel ha scattato dal gruppo in pianura, e Vingegaard è stato il primo e unico a rispondergli. I due, considerati grandi rivali di Pogacar, hanno formato un tandem imprendibile, guadagnando un vantaggio di 14 secondi a un solo chilometro dal traguardo. Tuttavia, a soli 800 metri dall’arrivo, Evenepoel è scivolato sulle strisce pedonali, cadendo a terra a circa 60 km/h e riportando ferite. Vingegaard, vedendo l’accaduto, ha rallentato intenzionalmente, lasciandosi riprendere dal gruppo a 150 metri dal traguardo. La tappa è stata poi vinta in volata dal francese Dorian Godon (Ineos Grenadiers), che ha conquistato anche la maglia bianca di leader.
Il Gesto di Fair Play di Vingegaard
L’attenzione, tuttavia, è rimasta sui due protagonisti. Evenepoel, ancora stordito e confuso dall’incidente, faticava a comprendere l’accaduto. Vingegaard, da parte sua, ha spiegato il suo gesto di fair play: «Non so cosa gli sia successo, è stata una caduta un po’ folle, ho visto che ha perso il controllo del manubrio. Naturalmente, non volevo approfittare di quella situazione, ho rallentato e mi sono fatto raggiungere dal gruppo. Non mi aspettavo affatto la sua caduta. Pensavamo che la tappa si sarebbe conclusa con una volata, poi all’improvviso ho visto Remco partire e gli sono andato dietro. Abbiamo lavorato insieme, ed è andato fortissimo.» Il Giro di Catalogna promette ancora grande spettacolo, con tre arrivi in salita da giovedì a sabato, prima del gran finale a Barcellona, sul circuito olimpico del Montjuïc.
Evenepoel-Vingegaard, Plains Spectacle: Then Remco Falls and Jonas Shows Fair Play
In the third stage of the Volta a Catalunya, two cycling superstars, Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard, ignited a spectacular breakaway, transforming a flat stage into a direct challenge. Despite the toughest mountain finish being scheduled later at Vallter, their undeniable desire to attack pushed them to dare much earlier.
Breakaway and Unexpected Crash
With 24 km remaining to the finish in Vila-seca, Evenepoel surged from the peloton on the flat, and Vingegaard was the first and only one to respond. The two, considered major rivals to Pogacar, formed an uncatchable tandem, gaining a 14-second lead just one kilometer from the line. However, only 800 meters from the finish, Evenepoel slid on a pedestrian crossing, crashing at around 60 km/h and sustaining injuries. Vingegaard, witnessing the incident, deliberately slowed down, allowing the peloton to catch him 150 meters from the finish. The stage was subsequently won in a sprint by Frenchman Dorian Godon (Ineos Grenadiers), who also claimed the white leader’s jersey.
Vingegaard’s Act of Fair Play
Nevertheless, all eyes remained on the two protagonists. Evenepoel, still dazed and confused by the incident, struggled to comprehend what had happened. Vingegaard, for his part, explained his act of fair play: «I don’t know what happened to him, it was a bit of a crazy crash, I saw him lose control of the handlebars. Naturally, I didn’t want to take any advantage from that situation, I slowed down and let the peloton catch me. I really didn’t expect his crash at all. We thought the stage would end in a sprint, then suddenly I saw Remco go, and I went after him. We worked together, and he was very strong.» The Volta a Catalunya still promises great excitement, with three mountain finishes from Thursday to Saturday, before the grand finale in Barcelona, on the Montjuïc Olympic circuit.
