German basketball sensation Eric Reibe and the UConn Huskies have secured a coveted spot in the March Madness Final Four, following a thrilling 73-72 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in a quarterfinal clash. The decisive moment came with just 0.4 seconds left on the clock, when Braylon Mullins sank a game-winning three-pointer from beyond ten meters, thus eliminating Duke, a team featuring Cameron Boozer, a potential top prospect in the upcoming NBA Draft.
Reibe contributed two points, one rebound, and one assist off the bench during his seven minutes of play. His German teammate, Dwayne Koroma, did not see action in the game.
The Huskies, with Reibe, will now face the Illinois Fighting Illini in the semifinal. The other Final Four matchup will see Ivan Kharchenkov, the 2024 U18 European Champion, and the Arizona Wildcats take on the Michigan Wolverines, who previously defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 95-62 in their quarterfinal. German player Malick Kordel, part of the Wolverines squad, was not utilized in that game.
Reibe’s achievement adds another chapter to the storied history of German players excelling at March Madness. Notable past champions include World Champion Niels Giffey, who secured two titles with UConn (once with Leon Tolksdorf 12 years ago, and previously in 2011 with Enosch Wolf), as well as earlier victors like 1993 European Champion and former national coach Henrik Rödl (North Carolina Tar Heels/1993), Christian Ast (Duke Blue Devils/1991 and 1992), and Magnus Pelkowski (Indiana Hoosiers/1987).
The March Madness tournament, a highly anticipated knockout competition for the US college basketball title, is a cornerstone of the American sports calendar, captivating millions of fans nationwide. The tournament began with 64 teams vying for the championship.
