Enzo Fernandez Reportedly Wants to Leave Chelsea for €140 Million

Vice-captain Enzo Fernandez is reportedly looking to depart FC Chelsea. According to the BBC, the Argentine midfielder is working towards leaving the Club World Cup winners next season.

The Premier League club’s management has been informed of the 25-year-old’s desire to move and is demanding a transfer fee of €140 million. Fernandez is currently under contract in London until 2032.

Fernandez’s pursuit of a change of scenery in the summer is not surprising given the events of recent months. In early April, Chelsea suspended him after he left his future uncertain following their crushing Champions League exit against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (2-5, 0-3). A few days later, in an interview with Argentinian media, he emphasized his desire to live in Madrid if he were to leave London, as it reminded him of Buenos Aires.

Then-Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior justified the suspension by saying: «It’s disappointing that Enzo speaks like this. I have nothing bad to say about him, but a line has been crossed regarding our culture and what we want to build.»

Did Enzo Fernandez Already Say Goodbye to the Chelsea Fans?

Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, was incensed by the situation. The former professional player fumed to The Athletic: «The punishment is completely unfair – suspending the player for two games, which are absolutely crucial for Chelsea, as it’s about Champions League qualification and he is one of the most important players in the team.» He continued, «I think this is far too harsh given Chelsea’s current situation, and there is no real reason or justification for why he was suspended.»

Although Fernandez later returned to the Blues’ squad, he could not prevent their poor performance in the past season. Chelsea finished in a disappointing tenth place in the English top flight, thereby missing out on European competition. This is another reason why Pastore is now working on his client’s transfer. According to the BBC, the club of new head coach Xabi Alonso is fundamentally keen to keep the midfielder. However, if an interested club offers a transfer fee in the aforementioned region, a sale will be considered.

What is striking in this context: after the 1-2 defeat against promoted side FC Sunderland on the final matchday, Fernandez waved to the Chelsea supporters alone for a long time. This action was interpreted by many fans on social media as a farewell gesture.

Enzo Fernandez Transferred from Benfica to FC Chelsea

After winning the World Cup in Qatar and a long transfer saga, Fernandez moved to Stamford Bridge from Benfica in early 2023 for a transfer fee of €121 million. This made him Chelsea’s most expensive new signing in history.

There are no concrete rumors about his potential new employer. He is loosely linked with Spain’s record champions Real Madrid, who are reportedly looking for a new star for the central midfield. Also reportedly in contention are the English runners-up Manchester City and Pastore’s former club PSG.

Last season, Fernandez played 54 games for the Blues, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists. The 40-time international is once again in Argentina’s squad for the World Cup in the summer.
