England Secures Group Victory at the World Cup Thanks to Jude Bellingham

England has secured their group’s top spot in the World Cup by winning their final preliminary match against Panama.

Record-breaker Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham’s striking partnership prevented England from another goalless draw, securing them the group lead. The team, managed by German coach Thomas Tuchel, struggled against the football minnows Panama, eventually winning 2-0 (0-0). This victory positions them favorably for the knockout stages. In the round of 16, the group winner will face a third-place team from another group in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Just before the knockout phase began, the Three Lions seemed to have lost their scoring touch, until Bellingham (62nd minute) and Kane (67th minute) finally delivered for the English fans. With aspirations of winning their second title, 60 years after their first and only triumph, the team, including FC Bayern’s top scorer Kane, who became England’s sole record World Cup goalscorer, will need to improve.

England had already advanced to the next round on the previous day while watching from their couches, as the results from other groups ensured their participation in the knockout stages before the match even kicked off. Nevertheless, Tuchel demanded a victory: «We want to win the group.»

The problem? His team seamlessly continued their uninspired goalless performance against Ghana. Lacking power, ideas, and any real goal threat, England offered little in the first half. Amidst typical English rain, fans in their waterproof ponchos were reminded little of their opening fireworks display against Croatia (4-2).

England Grinds Out a Win Against Panama

Tuchel had brought in fresh legs and given his regular player Declan Rice a rest. Jarell Quansah from Leverkusen replaced the injured Reece James (thigh) and made his World Cup debut. Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford started on the wings for the first time, with Rashford being the only Englishman to create occasional danger. Kane, who had started the tournament with a brace, remained largely anonymous initially.

In the 2018 World Cup, England had thrashed Panama 6-1, with Kane scoring three times. Unlike eight years ago, the underdog played boldly and attacked frequently this time. However, José Cordoba almost provided an equalizer for the English, but his shot hit a teammate in the five-yard box, and the ball flew just over the goal (52nd minute).

After Kane (57th minute) made his first dangerous appearance in the opponent’s penalty area, Tuchel’s team improved. It took a corner, however, for England to take the lead. Bellingham pushed the ball over the line. Kane followed up with a perfect header, surpassing Gary Lineker with his eleventh World Cup goal.
