Three Penalties Fuel BVB’s Late Victory Against HSV
Coach Niko Kovac’s team, after a largely lackluster performance, secured a dramatic 3-2 (0-2) victory against Hamburger SV with a flurry of late goals, solidifying their second-place standing in the league.
Philip Otele (19th minute) and Albert Sambi Lokonga (38th minute) had put HSV in a dream position, leading 2-0 and hoping for their first win in Dortmund since 2014. However, Ramy Bensebaini (73rd minute, penalty kick after a foul, and 84th minute, penalty kick for handball) and Fábio Silva (78th minute) orchestrated the comeback for BVB. Earlier, Felix Nmecha (45th minute) had missed a penalty, firing it wide. For HSV, battling relegation, this defeat was a significant setback.
Dortmund struggled to find their rhythm, especially in the first half, and even the whistles from their home crowd couldn’t ignite them. BVB visibly struggled to maintain focus and intensity. Having already been eliminated from the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) and the Champions League, and with a considerable points gap behind record champions Bayern Munich, their Bundesliga title aspirations were all but over. Despite this, Coach Kovac had repeatedly urged his team to take the remaining matches seriously – an urgency that only manifested in the final stages of this game.
The match initially painted a grim picture for Dortmund. Maximilian Beier, surprisingly not called up for the national team, had an early chance to give BVB the lead but was denied by HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes (7th minute) after a skillful solo run. Beyond that, Dortmund offered little in the first half. Daniel Svensson carelessly lost the ball as the last defender to William Mikelbrencis, whose cross was converted by Otele. HSV could have extended their lead, as Dortmund suffered from an unusual number of turnovers, practically inviting the visitors to score. It wasn’t long before Hamburg accepted another gift: Dortmund again lost possession just outside their own box, allowing Lokonga to double their advantage. Nmecha’s missed penalty just before halftime perfectly encapsulated BVB’s disappointing first-half performance.
Kovac reacted decisively at halftime, substituting the struggling Karim Adeyemi and Luca Reggiani. Serhou Guirassy was brought on to provide more attacking presence and act as a target man, though it was Nmecha who squandered the first major chance after the break (49th minute). Dortmund then began to dominate play, pinning HSV back in their own half. However, the alert Hamburg defense repeatedly intercepted passes and limited clear-cut opportunities. Carney Chukwuemeka, recently called up for the Austrian national team by Ralf Rangnick, and Fábio Silva were also introduced for BVB. The favorites only truly became threatening in the closing stages – but managed to turn the game on its head.

Match Summary: Borussia Dortmund vs. HSV
This was truly a top match! We witnessed two completely different halves today in Dortmund. The first half saw a completely erratic Borussia Dortmund deservedly fall 0-2 behind against a courageous Hamburger SV. After the break, however, HSV played far too passively and was ultimately punished in the final fifteen minutes. Both of Kovac’s halftime substitutions proved decisive, and Dortmund ultimately secured a well-deserved 3-2 victory. The atmosphere in the Signal-Iduna-Park became electric as Dortmund pressed relentlessly. The comeback began in the 73rd minute when Ramy Bensebaini converted a penalty, awarded after a VAR review for a foul on Beier. Just five minutes later, Fábio Silva equalized from close range after Serhou Guirassy’s initial attempts were saved, with the goal eventually credited to Guirassy. The dramatic turnaround was completed in the 84th minute when Bensebaini confidently slotted home his second penalty of the game, awarded for a handball in the box. HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, despite several excellent saves, couldn’t prevent the late collapse. Dortmund continued to push for more goals even after taking the lead, showcasing a renewed determination that was absent in the first half.
