In an interview with `La Gazzetta dello Sport`, Dino Zoff, the legendary former goalkeeper and coach of Juventus and the Italian national team, discussed how he would have fared in modern football, where keepers are increasingly expected to play the ball out from the back. He stated, “I believe I would have done well, as my footwork wasn`t bad for a goalkeeper. Furthermore, I think that whenever a rule changes, players always find a way to adapt to the new situation. The real issue, however, is different.”
He elaborated, “The goalkeeper shouldn`t be forced to touch the ball more often than a striker. I`m talking about playing out from deep. A keeper already carries a massive responsibility in preventing goals. Forcing them into this role adds more risks and ultimately puts excessive pressure on them.”
