The decision regarding Manuel Neuer’s future at FC Bayern might take longer than the soon-to-be 40-year-old starting goalkeeper had initially anticipated.
Sport Director Christoph Freund confirmed during a press conference on Friday, «There are ongoing discussions with Manu.» However, Freund does not seem to expect an imminent decision regarding a potential extension of Neuer’s contract, which is set to expire this summer.
Freund added, «We will see what April and early May bring, once he is back in goal, how he feels then, even with multiple matches per week.» He stated that Neuer would then «approach us,» and «we will then have joint discussions and determine the direction things should take.» Freund emphasized that «what his gut feeling tells him» is crucial.
Earlier this year, during a fan club visit, Neuer had expressed a «positive» stance towards a contract extension, stating he would «make a final decision» by late March or early April. Currently, it seems entirely uncertain whether Neuer will continue his career, a situation likely linked to his persistent health issues.
Manuel Neuer Grapples with Injury Problems
Shortly before Christmas, Neuer was sidelined for the first time due to a muscle fiber tear. In mid-February, he sustained another calf muscle fiber tear during the Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen. Two weeks ago, he returned to the starting lineup against Borussia Mönchengladbach but had to be substituted at halftime and has been absent since then.
Neuer is currently being deputized by 22-year-old Jonas Urbig. Coach Vincent Kompany stated that Urbig would «normally» start against Union Berlin on Saturday. This implies Neuer will only return to FC Bayern’s goal after the upcoming international break, at which point he will be 40 years old. Neuer celebrates his milestone birthday on Friday.
Vincent Kompany Reflects on His Own Career End
«40 is young,» believes Kompany, who himself will turn 40 on April 10th. Kompany ended his active playing career in 2020. He felt he «could have continued mentally,» but «my knees decided otherwise.» Kompany concluded that «hunger is the most important word» during these advanced stages of a career.
Kompany continued, «Manu fought his way back from a very significant injury, which was impressive. This season, he was in incredible form. Consistently performing at that level is a mental thing. But at some point, your body tells you: continue or not. That was my experience. 40 is young, but you need a lot of motivation to keep reaching that level.»
