Midfield legend Danny Murphy has strongly advised his former club, Liverpool FC, to consider a managerial change this summer and suggested the acquisition of Paris Saint-Germain’s successful coach, Luis Enrique.
Rumors surrounding the potential replacement of current LFC manager Arne Slot have quieted down, with little indication of an imminent departure for Jürgen Klopp’s successor. However, Murphy believes this should happen regardless of the team’s Champions League qualification secured on the final Premier League matchday.
The former England international explained his reasoning on talkSPORT: «If Slot doesn’t start well, the pressure is back on immediately. If they’re struggling around fifth, sixth, or seventh place after eight games, it’s over.»
For this reason, Murphy does not believe Slot will have significant influence over Liverpool’s transfer decisions this summer.
Murphy: Liverpool Should Go All Out for Enrique
He therefore advises a decisive move this summer and targeting the PSG manager: «I would dare to break the bank and try everything to get Luis Enrique.» He believes the Spaniard might be seeking a new adventure after potentially winning the Champions League again on Saturday.
«If he wins the Champions League again, what’s left for him?» asked Murphy, who was a key figure in the Reds’ midfield between 1997 and 2004. «It must be boring for him to play in this Mickey Mouse league (Ligue 1), where he wins every week. All he can look forward to is the Champions League. He must want a bigger challenge, right?»
Luis Enrique is Under Contract at PSG Until 2027
Enrique has been at PSG since 2023, leading the capital club to three French championships and the Champions League in the previous season. On Saturday, he will lead his team in Budapest for the final of the prestigious trophy against Liverpool’s Premier League rivals, FC Arsenal. The 56-year-old’s contract runs until 2027. PSG is keen to extend his contract, and Enrique himself has consistently stated his desire to remain at the Seine.
Nevertheless, Murphy sees him as the perfect successor to Slot: «Liverpool fans watching PSG think: ‘I want us to play like that too.’ PSG plays a bit like Jürgen Klopp’s team back then, right? And if you’re one of the biggest clubs in the world, you have to get the best.»
He no longer believes in a positive turnaround after the dethroned English champions’ inconsistent season under Slot. The «background noise» has simply become too loud, according to the 49-year-old former professional.
Luis Enrique’s Record at PSG:
| Games | 173 |
| Wins | 121 |
| Draws | 27 |
| Losses | 25 |
