Carlo Nesti Calls for Return to Federal Coaches, Backs Nunziata or Buffon

`Carlo

In his daily column, Carlo Nesti analyzed the current state of the Italian national team, stating: `FIGC President Gravina cannot, as if by divine right, expect to sack a coach overnight and find a replacement just as quickly. The Federation damaged itself significantly the day Matarrese appointed Sacchi, who was a successful and modern coach for AC Milan. Previously, the federation comfortably relied on federal coaches, who were accustomed to working with players for short periods and didn`t have excessive financial demands. Four such names are Valcareggi, Bearzot, Vicini, and Maldini. With these four coaches, Italy achieved a first, second, and third place finish at the World Cup, a first place at the European Championship, and three Under-21 European titles.`

`That`s the equivalent of seven medals with just four coaches. Nowadays, they seek a big-name coach who never has sufficient time to implement their work, unlike at a club level. I would advocate for a significant change in direction and support Nunziata, the current Under-21 coach, thereby bringing back the previous successful approach. If a more high-profile alternative is sought, let`s not forget that Gianluigi Buffon is already within the Federation structure and holds qualifications as both a sporting director and a goalkeeping coach. Why shouldn`t he be considered, perhaps alongside other members of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad?`
