Calvarese’s View: Freuler-McKennie Collision Wasn’t a Penalty

Former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese has shared his expert analysis regarding the incident involving Freuler and McKennie within the Bologna penalty area, which prompted penalty appeals.

Writing on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Calvarese stated: “Both McKennie and Freuler intend to reach the ball, but neither manages to gain an advantage. Freuler extends his leg, no longer with the aim of reaching the sphere (unlike McKennie), but rather to intentionally make contact and be brought down by his opponent. There is a collision, but in my opinion, nothing constitutes a foul.”
