Calamai: Acerbi Deserves Rulebook Disqualification, But Moral One Suffices

`Luca

In his editorial featured on Tuttomercatoweb, journalist Luca Calamai weighed in on the controversy surrounding Luciano Spalletti and Francesco Acerbi. Calamai noted that Spalletti had informed Acerbi of his potential inclusion in the squad for the Norway match and subsequently listed him among the call-ups days earlier. He asserted that if Acerbi had reservations about joining the national team, he should have voiced them immediately. According to Calamai, it is unacceptable to decline the call-up days later, particularly without extending Spalletti the courtesy and respect of a direct phone call. By the strict interpretation of regulations, the player could indeed be disqualified. However, the Football Federation opted against taking disciplinary action. Calamai believes that for those who cherish Italian football, the moral disqualification bestowed upon Mr. Acerbi is entirely adequate.

Shifting his focus to Inter, Calamai also offered his assessment: “The association with Simone Inzaghi must conclude now. This remains true even if the tempting, extravagant offers the coach reportedly received from wealthy Arab clubs were to disappear from consideration. The Inzaghi cycle has reached its end. Without question, the coach had the capability and the obligation to secure more victories. It is now the task of Marotta to identify a new leader and invigorate a squad that appears somewhat exhausted.”
