Arijon Ibrahimović: A Surprise Backup for Luis Díaz? Bayern’s New Youth Strategy in Action

Arijon Ibrahimović is finally experiencing a successful loan spell, much to Vincent Kompany’s apparent satisfaction. Will he now get his chance at FC Bayern?

This season, a clear trend is emerging at FC Bayern: young talents are increasingly getting opportunities with the first team when game situations allow. Recent examples include the Champions League debuts of left-back Deniz Ofli (18) and center-back Filip Pavic (16) against Atalanta Bergamo.

At 16 years, one month, and 27 days, Pavic is now the youngest player ever to feature for FC Bayern in the Champions League. Sporting Director Max Eberl praised the debutants, stating: «The boys justified the trust placed in them.»

In addition to this duo, seven other youth players from the club’s academy have already made their professional debuts this season: Cassiano Kiala (17), Jonah Kusi-Asare (18, on loan at FC Fulham), Felipe Chavez (18, on loan at 1. FC Köln), David Santos Daiber (19), Maycon Cardozo (17), Wisdom Mike (17) – and notably, Lennart Karl (17).

A «youth movement» is solidifying at the German record champions, benefiting even loaned-out players as part of a new transfer strategy. Noel Aseko will return after his loan spell to compete for a squad spot in the summer, potentially vacated by Leon Goretzka’s anticipated departure from central midfield. At Hannover 96, Aseko developed into a key player and junior international, impressing with strong physicality and goal threat.

Although Hannover 96 exercised the buy option agreed upon 18 months ago for the 20-year-old, FC Bayern immediately activated its buy-back clause. The current strategy at FCB aims to avoid expensive new signings and instead fill squad positions with homegrown talents.

A similar path was taken by Lennart Karl, who emerged as a winger and number ten backup for Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala, and Serge Gnabry, and is now even likely to be called up for the German national team for the World Cup. Aseko is also expected to get the chance to establish himself as a challenger and backup in Munich this summer.

This «new» trend could also prove fortunate for another Bayern loanee.

Kompany Noticing Ibrahimović’s Development in Heidenheim

Arijon Ibrahimović’s loan spell is finally proving successful. Although 1. FC Heidenheim is likely to finish in a direct relegation spot, Ibrahimović is gaining something there that he rarely experienced in his professional career: regular appearances at the highest level.

His previous loan spells in Italy’s Serie A, at Lazio Roma and Frosinone, were rather disappointing. At Lazio, he played only 19 minutes in the first half of 2025. At Frosinone, he accumulated a more respectable 594 minutes and two goals during the 2023/24 season.

Considering his current standing in Heidenheim, those earlier statistics now seem almost laughable. Under coach Frank Schmidt, Ibrahimović is virtually indispensable. He starts in almost 80 percent of games, often plays the full ninety minutes, and, alongside Marnon Busch, is the top assist provider (3) for an offensively limited team. He is among the top five Bundesliga players for most sprints (559) and ranks eleventh league-wide in intensive runs (1800), just behind Michael Olise (1825).

Undoubtedly, Ibrahimović has made significant strides in his development this season. The question now is what’s next for him. Reports indicate that Vincent Kompany has «favorably noted» Ibrahimović’s progress.

Ibrahimović as a Díaz Backup or Permanent Departure from FC Bayern?

There are reportedly serious considerations to integrate Ibrahimović into the first team upon his return to Munich, developing him as a backup for the versatile Luis Díaz – much like Lennart Karl is for Olise. Ibrahimović himself would likely welcome this idea, as he has ruled out another loan spell, a point he made clear last winter.

«I don’t want to be loaned out again. I’d like to have a permanent club,» he stated months ago. Should things not work out at FC Bayern despite the new youth focus, the German U21 international has other options. His contract runs until 2027, which means the record champions could secure a transfer fee this summer.

Reportedly, Serie A clubs like Cagliari and Fiorentina are showing renewed interest. FC Villarreal and three other Spanish clubs also have Ibrahimović on their radar. A move within the Bundesliga is also possible, with four unnamed clubs reportedly monitoring the Nuremberg-born player. Even top international scouting club Brighton & Hove is said to have noticed him.

However, he would most prefer to try again at «his» FC Bayern. Since 2018, Ibrahimović has progressed through all the youth teams there. For the U19s, he impressively scored 23 goals and provided 19 assists in 41 games. His deserved reward came on February 11, 2023, when he made his Bundesliga debut for the record champions against VfL Bochum, followed by only three brief appearances. Now, he might be given a more significant role at Säbener Straße.
