Former AC Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia recently spoke at the 12th edition of the Claudio Lippi Memorial, an event held to remember the Milan journalist who tragically lost his life in a road accident twelve years ago. His comments, gathered by TMW, covered various topics, including the Champions League final and Milan`s recent campaign.
On Donnarumma`s potential role in the Champions League final:
`I have affection for Gigio, and I hope he does well! People here say you should support an Italian team: I played for Milan for five years, so it feels difficult, and supporting Inter seems a bit hard; it won`t happen. I will support Gigio.`
Amelia also commented on AC Milan`s season:
`As a Milan fan, saying a season like this is sufficient… It can never truly be sufficient, but it can represent a starting point. Milan`s squad is stronger than what it showed this year. It demonstrated this in many matches, while in others it performed below expectations. There is a need to find balance, starting from the top and reaching down to the locker room. That spirit which has always defined Milan over the last 30-35 years also needs to be rediscovered. Among the directors, there is an former teammate of mine who is actively trying to bring back that mentality. But it`s not easy to make someone understand who hasn`t experienced it. It takes time, and perhaps a season like this was necessary to understand what is lacking.
I am convinced that Milan will start next season in a strong position because the team is strong. It truly is. The players are strong; they showed it against top teams and in the derbies. The important thing will be to regain consistency, that winning mentality that has always characterized the world of Milan. We are talking about one of the most important clubs globally. For this reason, we must do everything possible to restart with the ambition that is expected.`
