Alphonso Davies Becomes Red Bull Ambassador, Stirring Controversy Among Bayern Fans

FC Bayern Munich’s prominent left-back, Alphonso Davies, has ventured into a high-profile, potentially contentious, sponsorship deal, becoming the new advertising face for the energy drink manufacturer Red Bull.

The Canadian international announced this significant partnership across multiple posts on his Instagram account.

«I’m starting a new chapter with Red Bull. I’m proud to be part of the family,» Davies wrote in his Instagram caption, accompanied by images featuring him with a Red Bull can and cap.

This decision is likely to be met with considerable disapproval from FC Bayern’s passionate supporters in Munich. The club’s active fan base is a well-known opponent of the Red Bull corporation and its perceived over-commercialization and influence in football. This opposition frequently manifests through anti-Red Bull banners displayed at matches and boycotts of away games against RB Leipzig.

Widespread Criticism of Red Bull’s Football Model

The core of the fans’ discontent lies in the belief that Red Bull’s various football projects are primarily established to market the Red Bull product itself, making football merely a means to an end. Bayern supporters are by no means alone in this criticism; this approach is widely rejected by organized fan groups across significant parts of the Bundesliga.

Just last year, Jürgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, also generated controversy with his own partnership with the Red Bull group. Supporters of 1. FSV Mainz 05, where Klopp began his illustrious coaching career, expressed their displeasure through various banners, with messages such as «Are you crazy, Klopp?» and the «Ultraszene Mainz» proclaiming, «You forgot everything we let you become.»

The «Rheingold Ultragroup» referenced a past quote from Klopp, stating: «Klopp: ‘I like people until they disappoint me’.» This was an allusion to a statement the former Liverpool team manager made in a podcast last summer, where he explained, «I like people… I approach people very openly until they disappoint me. I don’t go in with the attitude from the outset that they will probably disappoint me.»
