Interviewed during the International Fair Play Menarini award ceremony, Demetrio Albertini, a former midfielder for clubs like Milan and the national team, and a former executive of the FIGC, offered his perspective on the possibility of Rino Gattuso being appointed as the head coach of the Italian national team.
Albertini expressed his surprise regarding the way Luciano Spalletti`s dismissal was handled, particularly noting the timing of the press conference between matches. “Being on the outside,” he stated, “I honestly don`t know what exactly happened, whether this handling was something planned in advance or spontaneous.”
He added that, observing the situation as a fan from the outside now that he is no longer involved with the federation, he initially expected a replacement to be announced immediately the following day. However, he believes that perhaps after one or two other coaches might have withdrawn, the focus shifted to finding the best available alternative. Albertini suggests that in this context, Gattuso represents that best option at this specific time.
