The Italian Footballers` Association (AIC) believes that gambling is a generational problem, not solely an issue with football players. AIC President Umberto Calcagno stresses the need for government-funded awareness campaigns to educate young people and involve parents. He argues that intervention is crucial before the age of 14-16, as later intervention is less effective.
Calcagno aims to shift focus from media sensationalism and illicitly published chats towards positive examples of individuals who have made mistakes but are working to rectify them. He emphasizes that these young athletes are facing a gambling addiction problem and have not committed crimes. Calcagno advocates for strengthening the re-educative function of penalties, as outlined in Article 27 of the Constitution, especially for those in sports.
