Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers is set to play his final NFL season.
The 42-year-old, who recently signed a new one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, announced his decision on Wednesday. «Yes, that was it,» Rodgers responded when asked if this would be his last playing year.
The deciding factor in his choice was the renewed collaboration with Head Coach Mike McCarthy. The former Green Bay Packers coach joined the Steelers in January after Mike Tomlin resigned following the team’s exit in the Wildcard round of the playoffs. «It definitely comes full circle, that’s what piqued my interest,» Rodgers stated.
Rodgers played in Green Bay from 2005 to 2022. He joined Pittsburgh in 2025 via the New York Jets. The veteran admitted that there were «definitely some doubts» about whether he should play another year.
«I thought that was it for me in Pittsburgh,» Rodgers said. «But when the decision was made to hire Mike, I started to open myself up to returning.» Rodgers and McCarthy celebrated a Super Bowl title together against Pittsburgh in 2011.
Rodgers had only extended his contract for another year on Monday. The veteran, a four-time league MVP, is expected to earn up to $25 million for this final season. Rodgers will embark on his 22nd NFL season this autumn.
