«A Bit Scary»: From Locker Room Fights to a World-Class Club for Almost 60 Million Euros? The Rocky Road of a Big World Cup Surprise

Crysencio Summerville did not take the direct route to the national team. However, at the World Cup, he is now on the verge of becoming a tournament sensation. And then, a multi-million euro transfer might be on the horizon.

Daniel Farke always knew. «We don’t need to talk about his potential, because for Cry, the sky is the limit,» the German coach of Leeds United said about his then-player Crysencio Summerville in February 2024 to Sky Sports.

At that time, he was still a second-division player. Now, almost two and a half years later, he is on the verge of becoming one of the breakout stars of the 2026 World Cup. Summerville is already the big surprise for co-favorite Netherlands. He only played his third international match last Sunday in the World Cup opener against Japan (2-2).

For the third time, Oranje coach Ronald Koeman had fielded the attacking player from West Ham United from the start. And Summerville justified the trust, among other things, with his spectacular goal to make it 2-1 for the Dutch team at one point. From his right wing, he cut inside with his dynamic burst of speed, putting himself in a scoring position and curling the ball perfectly into the far corner with his weaker left foot. A touch of Arjen Robben in Dallas.

«I was a big fan of Arjen Robben. The way he dribbled inside and shot at goal, I thought that was great. I try to do that myself from the left side too,» Summerville recently revealed in an interview with ESPN and then backed it up with action. When Robben left Bayern Munich in 2019, Summerville’s professional career was just beginning. And yet, he already experienced his first minor setback.

Born in Rotterdam, he joined Feyenoord’s youth academy at the age of six. Summerville was always considered a great talent. In May 2018, he became U17 European champion with the Dutch national team, scoring a goal in the tournament’s opening 3-0 victory against Germany, and ultimately celebrated the European Championship title alongside Wouter Burger, the Timber twins, Ryan Gravenberch, or Brian Brobbey.

However, about six months later, the then 17-year-old likely jeopardized his breakthrough at his youth club Feyenoord himself. Summerville, then a U19 player, got into a locker room fight with Mats Knoester from the second team. Feyenoord took decisive action, suspended Summerville, and sent him away on loan shortly thereafter. Second-division club FC Dordrecht made the move in January 2019. The talented dribbler gained valuable first professional experiences there and was quite convincing (five goals in 18 second-division games).

Breakthrough at the World Cup: Crysencio Summerville Has Had a Rocky Road

His potential was undisputed, and Summerville hoped for a future at Feyenoord. But far from it. «Of course, this departure hurt, because Feyenoord is my childhood club. […] Maybe we will come back together someday. Never say never,» the current national player once looked back in De Telegraaf.

In 2019/20, another loan followed, this time within the Eredivisie to then-first-division club ADO Den Haag. After that, at 18, Summerville turned his back on the Netherlands. He bravely took the step abroad early, and Leeds United brought him to England. However, initially for the U23 team.

«Initially, I had a very hard time because I went alone. But then you have to grow up quickly. I developed a lot there as a footballer and as a person,» Summerville is proud of his career path in retrospect, which was by no means straightforward. For two years, he was mainly used in the U23 team at Leeds, only getting occasional appearances in the first team. A tough school that has shaped the now 24-year-old.

«It was a big adventure, of course,» he said recently to Voetbal International about his beginnings on the island. «It was also a bit scary. As a young boy, I left my familiar life completely behind. My close-knit family, my education, the neighborhood I grew up in. But it turned out to be the right decision.»

His two prominent tattoos on his left forearm are dedicated to his upward journey. A large, roaring lion adorns one, with a small lion cub beneath it. «It represents where I come from,» Summerville explained during Oranje’s World Cup preparations. «I started as a little boy. Now I am the big lion who always keeps going mentally and physically and is unbreakable.»

He shares his penchant for lions with one of his teammates who was more expected to be in the Netherlands’ starting lineup at the World Cup: Memphis Depay. However, the attacking star from Corinthians only got a substitute appearance in the first group match against Japan, while Summerville seems to be a starter for Koeman for now. Leverkusen’s championship hero Jeremie Frimpong did not get a ticket to North America after a disappointing debut season at Liverpool. For the right wing and the position in front of the untouchable right-back Denzel Dumfries, Summerville ultimately got the nod over all his competitors.

Crysencio Summerville Impressed for the World Cup Despite Relegation with West Ham

«The coach naturally has to look at a player first to see if he fits into the team — both in terms of playing style and how he integrates into the group. So it was a surprise. I think the coaching staff has seen some of my games and knows my qualities,» Summerville said about his surprising World Cup nomination.

He might have been involved in the friendly matches at the end of March against Norway (2-1) and Ecuador (1-1). Striker legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, one of Koeman’s co-trainers since February, visited him in England and watched a West Ham match. But in early March, shortly before the aforementioned games, Summerville suffered a calf injury and was therefore not an option anyway.

Thus, the World Cup call-up, fulfilling a childhood dream for Summerville, was his very first nomination for the Dutch senior national team: «I was sitting on the sofa at home with my family when I heard about the nomination. It brought out a lot of emotions, especially because of the season where I struggled with many injuries,» reported Summerville.

After establishing himself as a Premier League player at Leeds in 2022/23 and shining in the Championship the following season after relegation (19 goals and nine assists in 43 league games), Summerville was ready for the next career step. Because he narrowly missed promotion with Leeds, he moved on in the summer of 2024. Financially, he greatly helped Farke’s team, as West Ham paid almost 30 million euros in transfer fees. From a sporting perspective, his mentor Farke would have naturally liked to keep his favorite student but had to let him go with a heavy heart.

At West Ham, Summerville’s potential was then far from heavenly spheres for a long time. In his first 19 Premier League appearances for the Londoners, he only contributed two direct goal involvements (one goal, one assist). The Dutchman missed the second half of his debut season at West Ham due to a thigh injury. Summerville even carried the injury into the past season, being completely sidelined from January to the end of August 2025.

Although minor injury problems continued to plague him, he managed to fight his way back and has shown a clear upward trend since the beginning of 2026. Summerville was one of the key players and one of the few constants at West Ham, which ultimately suffered relegation. Especially between mid-January and early March, Summerville attracted attention with strong performances, playing his way into the national team’s sights.

Having just digested the disappointment of relegation, Summerville debuted for Oranje at the beginning of June in the 0-1 friendly loss against Algeria. In his second international match, he provided his first assist in a 2-1 win against Uzbekistan. In his third international match, in the World Cup opener against Japan, his first goal followed. On Saturday evening, in the important second group match against Sweden, Koeman could field the tournament debutant from the start again.

Is Crysencio Summerville Moving to Manchester United for Almost 60 Million Euros?

And besides the World Cup euphoria, there is also a second major pillar that defines Summerville’s summer. Following West Ham’s relegation, a move for the winger, who usually plays on the left rather than the right at the club, is considered quite likely despite his contract running until 2029. The World Cup is therefore also a stage for Summerville to showcase himself to renowned clubs.

His dream destination would probably be FC Barcelona, where Raphinha, one of his role models and an important companion, plays. He looked up to the Brazilian during his difficult first two years at Leeds United when Raphinha was also playing there. «I learned from him to work hard. Also off the pitch,» he said about shared memories with the Barcelona star.

What Koeman appreciates about Summerville, besides his easily recognizable attacking qualities, is also his diligence in defensive play. The World Cup newcomer intercepts many balls, is strong in tackles, and is willing to put in the work. Qualities he had to quickly acquire in the Premier League — and which boost his confidence. When asked if he finds it difficult to find his place among the numerous top players of the Netherlands, Summerville countered with full conviction: «I play in the Premier League every week; the best players in the world are there. Many players who are here also play there. I don’t know what you mean.»

It is quite possible that he will be playing Premier League football again next season. Above all, Manchester United, which is returning to the Champions League as third-placed, is reportedly interested. Around 58 million euros in transfer fees would likely be required for the Red Devils. And Summerville’s rise would continue.
