The Italian Supreme Court (Cassazione) has officially concluded the legal proceedings related to the “mutiny” that divided the Napoli dressing room on November 5, 2019. The court ruled against former Napoli player Elseid Hysaj, currently playing for Lazio, ordering him to pay a fine of 40,000 euros in addition to court costs. This significant development, reported by today`s edition of Corriere dello Sport, finally resolves the legal disputes stemming from the widely publicized events of 2019, during the period when Carlo Ancelotti was managing the team.
According to the newspaper, it took five and a half years and three levels of judicial review to definitively establish that the players were not within their rights to refuse the training retreat mandated by the club following the Champions League draw against Salzburg. Napoli imposed disciplinary sanctions on the players who participated in the dissent. While several players, including Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens, initially contested these measures, nearly all players eventually reached a settlement with President Aurelio De Laurentiis` club after the Arbitral College`s decision in November 2021. However, the Albanian defender was an exception, opting to pursue appeals first through the Tribunal of Naples and ultimately escalating the matter to the Supreme Court.
